It has been four days of celebration since the 14-day intense climate negotiations came to a close in the South African port city of Durban. There is no villain, and no hero barring perhaps Canada for walking out of the Kyoto Protocol. What was achieved in Durban that has everyone happy except a few? The major emitters got all or almost all of what they wanted: to maintain status quo. "We have made history", exulted the South African Chairperson of the 17th Conference of Parties (COP) to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) at the conclusion of the conference on December 10, 2011. The Durban outcome has not pleased the US either. The Chief US negotiator, Mr. Todd Stern, is reported to have observed "This is a significant package. None of us likes everything in it. Believe me, there is plenty the United States is not thrilled about." Mr. Stern has enough reason to be apprehensive. President Obama's efforts to have energy and climate security legislation passed by the US Senate have yielded little results so far.

Renewable energy must be the way because it has the potential to help African countries invigorate their economies, wean themselves from dependence on fossil fuel and reduce the debt burden associated with oil importation. Renewable energy can also help increase households access to modern energy services; reduce energy poverty; improve the livelihood of the people; empower women; improve performance of students in schools; create jobs and bridge urban-rural inequality. It also has the potential to meet Africa's energy security needs; protect the environment; reduce natural resource conflicts (e.g. firewood collection); slow down rural-urban migration and associated urbanisation; and reduce carbon emissions and hence the negative impact of climate change.

It is believed that future wars are likely to be on water due to shortage of water on ecological reasons. In recent times, the world has witnessed a major surge in regional unrests caused primarily by the shortage of water. Tension builds up between two or more countries when an effort is made by any upper riparian country to control the waterways of Transboundary Rivers. Factors like population surge, industrialization and other development activities compel a country to control waterways. When such activities begin to affect the livelihood, ecology and growth of the lower riparian countries, they become a source of dispute. We are being blind to Pakistan's list of demands as well as it seeks control of water sources head and it is not just Kashmir. And China is tilting the scales to Pakistan's advantage.
A country, which relies on Diplomacy and spends little on Defence, is likely to suffer in the hands of China.

Keystone XL is a proposed pipeline to transport Canadian crude oil from a supply hub in Alberta to delivery points in Oklahoma and Texas. It has emerged as a major political headache for the Obama administration. It is being pitched by its backers as a jobs bonanza, creating over 20,000 jobs directly during the construction phase, and 118,000 indirectly. Once complete it will provide feedstock for Gulf Coast refineries and reduce reliance on less friendly foreign suppliers. Its detractors are calling it an environmental catastrophe. The issues aren´t just political. Thus framed, they pit two themes of Catholic Social Teaching in opposition to one another, the call to care for God´s creation, and the human right to meaningful work at a living wage.
