Shirin Nariman
Mrs. Nariman was 15 at the time of Iranīs revolution in 1979, and became involved with political activities in Iran. During those glorious days, she became familiar with the Peoples Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI) and became a supporter of the group.
Less than two years after the revolution, she was arrested because of her support for the PMOI when there was still some bit of freedom existing. She became one of the youngest political prisoners at the time and the most severely tortured. As a result of her motherīs pleas, her name ended up in the Red Cross list of underage prisoners and was visited by their representatives in Evin prison in 1981. She witnessed the brutal cruelty of this regime including the executions of a 13 year old teenager and a 70 year old woman; from a pregnant woman to mothers who left their children for the rest of the female prisoners to take care of.
She was among one of the lucky ones to be released and then came to the United States. In the past 24 years of living in the US, she had the opportunity to enjoy freedom and democracy and she has every intention of seeing her Iranian country men and women enjoy the same rights.
She has been disappointed a few times here in America too, but that is just a part of the democratic process which we are privileged to have. Something that people from 3rd world countries desire so much and pay for a bit of those freedoms with their blood. In the past 30 years, she has gained so much knowledge and learned so much about determination, anticipation, and she dares to dream of a free country named Iran.
With recent uprisings in Iran, we are witnessing the fall of one of the most brutal regimes in history. A regime based on fundamentalism, using the most forgiving religion for the most vicious intentions.
She has had opportunities to be interviewed by several mediaīs about Iran including CNN, Reuters, CBS. She also has written few articles about Iran and human rights in Iran. She had an analysis done on women condition and statistics for Beijing +5.
