W. George Krasnow

W. George Krasnow (also published as Vladislav Krasnov), Ph.D., former professor and director of Russian Studies at the Monterey Institute of International Studies in California, he now runs the Washington-based Russia & America Goodwill Associates (www.RAGA.org), a non-profit organization of Americans for friendship with Russia. He is the author of Soviet Defectors: The KGB wanted List, Solzhenitsyn and Dostoevsky: A Study in the Polyphonic Novel, and Russia Beyond Communism: A Chronicle of National Rebirth. In the past thirty years he has published Op-Ed columns in The Wall Street Journal, New York Times, International Herald Tribune, San Fransisco Examiner Chronicle, San Diego Union, and Dallas Morning News et al.. His recent articles on US-Russia relations appeared in Johnson's Russia List, Russia Blog, Russia: Other Points of View, OpenDemocracy (UK) and a number of Russian-language outlets. He is a columnist for the Fitzgerald Griffin Foundation (FGF)dedicated to preservation of the underpinnings of Western civilization.

The 30th annual World Russia Forum took place in Washington on March 29-30, 2011. Nikita Mikhalkov´s Conservative Manifesto: Whither Russia?
"The Manifesto of Enlightened Conservatism" just published by the Oscar-winning filmmaker and actor Nikita Mikhalkov caused quite a stir in Russia. Mikhalkov argues that modernization should not become a substitute for Westernization as Russia should develop in its own unique way. The Manifesto is especially significant in view of the different leanings of President Dmitry Medvedev, a presumed Westernizer, and Prime Miniser Vladimir Putin, a Russian nationalist.
June 12: Russia Day or Remember Tsar Mikhail II Day?
June 12 is supposed to be Russia's National Holiday. Originally it was establishe in 1990 as Russia's Independence Day. However, people wondered: Independence from whome? Now it is simply called "Russia Day." But it is still void of content. The author suggests that it should be a memorial day for Grand Duke Michael, Mikhail Aleksandrovich, the last tsar Michael II, who put the destiny of monarchy in the hands of the Russian people.
