There are two ends of the spectrum when it comes to animation. Those who like to watch it and those who like to produce it. Then there is the aspect of 2D and 3D animation. Popularity is rising with the 3D because of the realism but that does not mean there is going to be an end to the 2D.

Almost everyone enjoys cartoons of some type whether it is in the newspaper or on television. They are so popular that you will often see cartoon characters in a variety of advertisements. Saturday mornings used to be famous for cartoons. In today´s age they have somewhat been replaced with video games, but then even those characters are animated. In addition, the majority of animated box office hits are now all in 3D animation.

Here is a term that has not been heard of too often, Phenadistoscope. If you are familiar with it then you might be giving away your age. Actually, this was the technique used to give the animation effects. It was a matter of simple drawings that were made to move simultaneously.

If you are contemplating a career in animation then you have a few decisions to make. First, you need to determine if your interest lies in 2D, 3D or stop action. Then you will need to do some research and determine what are the skill requirements for these three distinct yet related entities. They all have one common denominator though and this they will all require you to have some basic artistic skills by way or drawing capabilities. In the case of 3D, it will be a necessity to have some talent in model building and sculpting.

Anyone that enjoys art and loves cartoons will most likely be intrigued with animation and find computer animation fascinating. Animation came alive with 2D animation then moved on into 3D, which has now become the way of the animation world. It would never have evolved to this point without the success of the 2D. In fact, it is still dependant on the skills required for 2D to be applied to 3D animation. Therefore, where you hear someone say the 2D animation is mundane then do not give it a second thought.

Out of all the entire career choices one could choose animation has to be one of the most intriguing and perhaps misleading if one thinks its all fun and no work. Before opting to get into this career, it would be wise to research what it entails. The best way to do this is to find some animations schools and see what you have to do to become an animator.

You many have noticed recently that the kids are far more interested in doing their homework and of course, most of it is done by utilizing the computer. In addition, you must admit you are impressed with some of those finished projects, and the presentation is really something. You did not realize that the little one was so artistic.

One of the most frustrating aspects I find about the computer world is all the decision making that goes with it, especially when it comes to purchasing software. It does not seem to matter what type. There is always plenty of it to go around, so much in fact; it becomes confusing and frustrating as to which one to buy.

One of the most important possessions you can obtain during your animation training is your Demo reel. Your demo is a taped journal of what you have done since you have been in training. All those long hard projects you worked on should be contained on this reel. Nothing would be more disheartening then to produce an excellent project and have nothing to show for it. The demo reel is a demonstration of what your capabilities are.

If you are even remotely considering a career in animation then make a decision to get the proper training. There are multitudes of individuals out there that are only half trained and possess the necessary skills. Unfortunately, they have not been trained to use them. It is these cases where it is very unlikely that they are going to find top paying positions within the industry.

You may be one of those animators that are determined that everything is going to be done by hand when it comes to your animation career. You may be shocked to learn that many of the big animation studios rely so much on software nowadays that they have their own specifically designed packages. This does not mean that you should shelve the basics of fundamentals or your drawing skills. What it means is you should enhance your career opportunities with every avenue that is open to you.

If one is going to enter into a career then it is a wise move to learn everything about the industry they are about to enter. All too often individuals will sign into an extensive training program and two things end up happening. The first is half way through the training they decide they do not like it or two they break into the job market and find out they are not doing what they were actually trained to do. Both of these disappointments may have been avoided with the proper research.

The usage of 3d animation may be immense. We have all seen animation and probably so much so that we have got to the point where we just take it for granted. If we have to stop and think about it, our explanation of it would be simply something that moves. Many of us would equate it to cartoons.

Many people when they hear the term animation they automatically think of cartoons, yet if they are on the computer at all then they have most likely been exposed to animation. This does not mean they have been watching cartoons when they were suppose to be working.

Today, it is possible for animation artists to pickup the skills of their trade without going to a special school to study animation. There´re numerous great books that teach animation techniques such as Richard William´s The Animator´s Survival Kit. By following the instructions in these books, you can conceivably teach yourself the nuts and bolts of animated filmmaking. Taking the home instruction idea even one step further, some books are now equipped with CDs and DVDs.

In a typical animation career you wear many hats. You may have a specific expertise, but chances are that just as often, you´ll juggle many skills and titles from job to job. Animation artists find most of their work via word of mouth. No offense to agents, reps, and recruiters, but to succeed in finding work in the business of animation is to develop and maintain relationships. We are, as Barbra Srteisand sang it, "people who need people."

The storyboard is the visual shot-by-shot translation of a script and is the basis for the entire production process that follows, including design, background and layout, animation, and postproduction. Despite changing technology, storyboards are still mostly drawn by hand.

There seems to be three major camps of animation artists. One camp´s long-term goal is to create, sell and produce their own television series or feature film. Another camp´s long-term goal is to create their own studio business. The third camp consists of people who are happy simply excelling as workers for hire.
