Unfortunately, we are in a time era where so many hobby shops are closing their doors for the last time. This makes it difficult for the avid model train hobbyist. It makes it even more difficult to buy the trains and parts when they are needed. It needn´t be that way though. If you have a computer or know someone that does, then you can do all your shopping right from the comfort of your own home. Just simply head to the internet and start searching for what you want or need.

Soon to follow with his superb model trains, Josh came out with a new gauge, and this was a small three rail O gauge. He had quickly seen the need for a train that would be more adaptable to home sizes and could generate off the electricity. That´s exactly what this gauge allowed and is still a very popular model today.

Like many of life´s wonderful inventions, the model train was discovered in a simple way. The discoverer was a fellow by the name of Josh Lionel Cowen. You guessed it, the name of the famous Lionel Trains. It was nothing elaborate just a very simple half train car that he motorized. The Marklin company, which I've talked about before on this site were the first to create the Z model train. It was created in 1972 in Germany. This was and still is the tiniest model train in the world. The distance exactly between the two tracks of a Z model scale train track is 6.55 mm.

This is a pretty common problem with railroaders, no matter how experienced they may be. It can be quite an annoying problem as well if it happens often, but it is fixable. There is no doubt that derailments will happen especially in the designing stages of your track layout, it will even happen with excessive speed on occasion.

The word locomotive can be split into two so as to convey its actual meaning. "Loco" means from a place and "motive" means "causing motion". One way you can know a true model train hobbyist is by the way he refers to his collection. He will never call it a toy train, it will always be a model train. To actually refer to a collector´s train set as a toy, is a bit of an insult, and they won´t be long in correcting you.

Then from there you have to decide what scale will best fit your designated area. If it´s a large area, then you don´t want too small of a scaled train set. The American Flyer is probably the most popular of all model train series. They did reach their peaks around the 40's and another peak in the 60's, they had been around for much longer then that. Their popularity is also skyrocketing today as well and they are I feel going to be around another 100 years!
