The Great Lie – Chapter 11 – Part 1
During the Main NOF (People´s Liberation Front) Council meeting a checklist of people expected to speak and the sequence in which they were scheduled to make their speeches was made. Then after some discussion it was decided to welcome a representative of the women´s division responsible for digging trenches and carrying logs and stones for building bunkers in the Vicho Region. But despite the warm welcome there were some opposing voices.
Happy 182nd Grigor Prlichev
Grigor Prlichev, the poet from Ohrid, is unquestionably the most highly developed personality in Macedonian literature of the past century .The true perfection of his verses quite justifiably gained for him the flattering epithet a Second Homer. He shone as an impressive writer and impassioned lover of the fine word. With the gems of poetic expression is his long poem The Sirdar, Prlichev came to be the pride of Macedonian literary history. At the same time, as a writer he represents a unique phenomena in his vision and in the profundity of the creative tragedy of his own voluntary and uncompromising choice.
The Great Lie – Chapter 11 – Part 2
They walked all day and finally reached Nivitsi. At the checkpoint before the entrance into the village Evgenia was detained. Vera´s explanation and assurances, even her threats to complain to Main Headquarters and even go to Zahariadis himself, were not cause enough to satisfy the security people. Not even her certificate which identified her position in large Greek letters was of any help.
The Great Lie – Chapter 10
In a half-lit room, sitting by the table placed in front of the window with a view of Mount Bela Voda, Zahariadis was writing something. He took a small break, just enough to take two or three sips of his tea, and at that moment he heard a quiet knock on the door. He put his cup to the side, collected his papers and placed them inside a newspaper.
The Great Lie – Chapter 8 - Part 2
The road to Mount Babuna was snowed in. After taking a sharp turn the first vehicle ran into a deep drift of snow causing the "Jemps" (military truck) to stall. The driver got off and after loudly cursing and spitting, yelled out: "Get off the truck and start clearing the snow!"
Medals for seven brave Macedonians
In March of last year the six Special Ops Army members volunteered for an extremely difficult and dangerous mission during which they extracted the body of deceased worker Vlatko Iliovski from the mine "Buchim".
The Great Lie – Chapter 9
You are to lead the entire group. In the beginning you will only listen to what they have to say, the Slavo-Macedonians, and you will note everything. At the end, you will act harshly. How? We will decide. Those who will keep you company will each have a separate task and their own say.
Examples of Human Rights Abuses in Greece - 1913 to 1993
In view of the International Court of Justice ruling against Greece in December 2011 for blocking Macedonia´s bid to join NATO in 2008, I believe it important to have the following items publicized along with the question: "When will Greece be found guilty of all the other crimes it has committed against the Macedonian people?"
The Great Lie – Chapter 8 - Part 1
In front of the double doors of the hospital entrance that was chained with barbed wire, stood a dirty truck. The guard, with his neck wrapped in the wide collar of his sheep-leather jacket, looked through the tinted glass of the kiosk, came out and in a mild tone of voice asked: "Documents!"
The Great Lie – Chapter 7 - Part 2
The Unit commissar lifted the patched up blanket that hung over the entrance of the underground hanger and with his shining, battery powered flashlight broke the tranquility. From his officer´s case he pulled out his thick notebook, turned over some pages and said:
The Great Lie – Chapter 6
"We had success on the battlefield," continued Zahariadis, after taking a large piece of Prespa, baked carp from the pan, "especially during the battle for Malimadi and the capture of towns in central Greece, confirming that creating a regular army is the right approach. But in spite of all our success, there are forces in our Party and in the Central Committee that still oppose the idea of having a regular army…"
The Great Lie – Chapter 7 - Part 1
In a semi-dark, cold, damp underground hangar, covered with three rows of oak logs and stones, resting on a moldy bed of dried ferns were two units of the 103 brigade. The units were formed the day before, immediately after the fighters returned from a battle they had lost.
The Great Lie – Chapter 5 - Part 2
"Goche and Keramidzhiev left Greece for Yugoslavia," continued Zahariadis "and never came back and that was no tragedy. And do you know why? First, because I agreed that they should go and agreed that I did not need them here. They interfered too much in the military. Secondly because, as political and military activists, I wanted them to have a bad relationship with those we have here. Our struggle had no practical use for them. They were as good as dead for the benefit of our movement. Understandably they only brought us grief before that and now. Their presence here would have caused us great damage. You know that they caused us damage with their activities!
The Great Lie – Chapter 4
"In Northern Greece the Macedonian people…" he paused. By the movement of his head it was obvious that he was unsure of the text. He reached for his pencil, stood up, walked around the room and reconsidered. He frowned. He went to the window, lifted the curtain slightly and for some time stared at the vastness of the fog covered lake. He turned and slowly and quietly moved away from the window, then began to pace between the door and the window. He threw a couple of logs into the fireplace and then stood beside the table. He sat down and with his head resting on his left hand he began to read again...
The Great Lie – Chapter 5 - Part 1
A week later in the afternoon, at the agreed upon time, Vlandas, Gusias and Bardzotas arrived at the Central Committee headquarters. They came on horseback escorted by a foot patrol which, in addition to providing security, stomped on the snow in front of the horses to make it easier for them to travel. Later, at dusk they were joined by Ioannidis.
The Great Lie – Chapter 3 - Part 2
Asamati… Here, after long discussions lasting all night, on December 23rd, 1947, the Provisional Democratic Government of Greece was formed. And still Zahariadis couldn´t forgive himself for appointing Markos as its President… Here they wondered and argued about how to lead an armed struggle rarely agreeing on a common strategy. Here, while they were relaxed and their conduct and conversations were tolerable, Zahariadis, for the first time expressed his idea to Markos about forming a regular revolutionary army. Markos did not accept the idea arguing that Partisan tactics in this country had served their struggle well, brought them success and gained them sympathy from abroad. After that their discussions became vigorous, they went their separate ways and were bitten by the bug of doubt and mistrust…
A Brief Look at the Macedonians from Greece
The Greek fascist terror in Greek occupied Macedonia forced many Macedonian families to leave their native homes and find shelter and peace abroad. My family was one of those families at the forefront of Greek terror. Because of war and because of political turmoil in the region, my father fled the village in 1946 and crossed the border to Yugoslavia.
Four years have passed since the death of Macedonian mega star Toshe Proeski
On October 16th, 2007 at 6:30 a.m. Toshe Proeski died in a tragic car accident on the Zagreb-Lipovac highway near Nova Gradiskka, Croatia. His car collided with a lorry on the motorway. He was only 26 years old when he died. Born on January 25th, 1981 he rose to stardom in the Republic of Macedonia but was very popular in the entire Balkans both for his artistic merit and for his humanitarian work. Proeski started his career at aged 15 and released his first album at age 18.
The Great Lie – Chapter 3 - Part 1
On the bare rocky hilltops of Mount Dzvezda and high up along the Mount Galichitsa incline the terrain looked like it was engulfed in purple flames. The sun was large and red hanging over a gap that separated Galichitsa in two. The sun´s crescent shone through the gap, making the water of Lake Prespa look like it was on fire, burning with purple flames. The glorious setting of the translucent, velvet sun lasted for only a moment before its red disc slowly disappeared behind the mountain.
International Day at CFB Borden – Sep 29, 2011
International Day is put on twice a year by CFB Borden to honour the countries that participate in the CFB Borden English language training program for foreign military personnel. This is an activity for the students to organize and participate in.
Australia´s official stance on Macedonia
In the article "Australia's official stance on the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM)" from September 13, sent to the American Chronicle by the so-called Australian Macedonian Advisory Council and written by certain Paul Kiritsis, their Executive Director, we find the following advice given to the Australian community in advance of the Republic of Macedonia's Prime Minister Nikola Gruevski's visit to Australia scheduled for late October.

Ms. Tracy is American of Spanish and Hungarian-Czech descent, teaches Latin in Westhampton Beach, Long Island, New York, and holds degrees in Latin, English and Education.
Macedonia Celebrates 20 years of independence – Special Edition
On Thursday September 8th the Republic of Macedonia marked its 20th year of independence in grand style with many celebrations taking place the world over but the grandest celebration of them all took place in downtown Skopje where hundreds of thousands of people attended. It was a celebration like no other.
The Great Lie – Chapter 2 - Part 2
Gray clouds hung over the sky and covered the boulders by the hill. Wind blew from the direction of Mount Malimadi. Silence followed only to be broken by the quiet rustle of dried autumn leaves, a rustle made by the gentle fall of little snowflakes. In no time the hills beyond were white with snow and on Georgi´s lips surfaced the dry question, "Who did all this to us and why?"!
Happy 109th Metodija Andonov-Chento – Part 2 of 2

Happy 68th, Battalion Mirche Atsef - Congratulations General Velichkovski
On August 18th, 1943 in a place called Slavej, on Karaorman Mountain in Debartsa, from the Partisan Detachments "Dame Gruev", "Gjorche Petrov" and "Dimitar Vlahov" the "Mirche Atsev" Battalion was formed, - First Battalion of the Second Operative Zone of Macedonia and first largest military unit. With the formation of the Battalion as a first regular military unit the process of creating the Peoples´ Liberation Army began.

The Great Lie – Chapter 2 - Part 1
Georgi entered the yard, took the remnants of the cradle and put it inside the outdoor oven. What happened to the child he wondered? This question he could not get out of his mind. He stood there a while and then left the yard. It took him a while to notice that under his feet lay a soiled rag from a wedding gown. A little further lay a twisted and broken belt buckle. "Mitra," Georgi muttered out loud – she was the last bride in the village.
Macedonia´s Partition – 98th Anniversary
By the signing of the Treaty of Bucharest, August 10th, 1913 became the darkest day in the history of the Macedonian people. August 10th, 1913 was the day when the Great Powers of Europe approved Macedonia´s permanent partition, done against the will of the Macedonian people. This was the day our Macedonia was handed over to Greece, Serbia and Bulgaria; a gift from the Great Powers, hand delivered by their delegates in Bucharest.
Ilinden and Ilo´s Birthday
On August 2nd, 338 BC, in the shallow Cephisus River valley near the village of Chaeronea on the road to Thebes, two opposing armies met face to face. On the north stood Philip´s Macedonians with 30,000 infantry and 2,000 cavalry, the largest Macedonian army ever assembled. Among Philip´s commanding generals was his 18 year-old son, Alexander, in charge of the cavalry. On the south side, stood the allied Athenians, Thebans and Achaeans who assembled 35,000 infantry and 2,000 cavalry, the largest army ever assembled since the Persian invasion.
Once a Greek Always a Greek
The following is an e-mail I received from someone who calls himself Dimitri and claims to be a Hellene-Greek. But as a typical Hellene-Greek he can´t help but put down and denigrate the entire Macedonian nation while trying to be kind and polite.
Macedonians, Philhellenes and Greeks
When the Western-philhellenes came to Greece to begin their project, they found this mass of befuddled individuals completely immersed in their struggle for survival and oblivious to the significance of their immediate surroundings. Out of them, they were supposed to create a link between the ancient Greeks and the envisioned new Hellene.
Foreign Armed Bands in Macedonia - (1903-1907)
THE ENTRY OF armed foreign bands into Macedonia, particularly after the suppression of the 1903 Ilinden Rebellion, was an extension of the religious struggle in its most extreme form. By itself, religious and educational propaganda failed to achieve desired outcomes. Paramilitary armed bands became a far more effective tool to mould Macedonian villages into a particular nationality through forced church adherence.
The Great Lie – Chapter 1
I am happy to announce that I have taken up a new project. I am currently in the process of translating Petre Nakovski´s novel "Golemata Izmama" (The Great Lie) from Macedonian to English. This is a story about the Macedonians in Greece and their devastating experiences during the Greek Civil War years.
Macedonian was never a part of the Hellenic city-states
Gandeto has said before, and stands by his assertions, that Macedonia was never a part of any ancient Greek city-state, nor were the ancient Macedonians ever considered, by the ancient Greeks or by themselves, to be Greek. Macedonia was never a member of any Hellenic League. Macedonia was not a member of the Greek Amphictyonic League.
The Rosetta Stone Center Text Translation - Controversy
Ever since the Rosetta stone center text translation presentation took place at the University of Toronto on May 15, 2011, I have been inundated with a barrage of questions ranging from wanting to know if I believed the text was genuinely translated, or if this was some sort of hoax, to asking me to give some details of the translation.
Population data recognizing Macedonian identity
By the late nineteenth century, Greece, Serbia and Bulgaria had either gained full independence or were self-administered in a semi- autonomous capacity. As such they were able to utilize a range of State resources to support and promote their position in Macedonia. European patrons and national churches were also of crucial importance in the independence struggles of the Balkan States. Prior to the abolition in 1767 of the Archbishopric of Ohrid by the Ottomans (at the instigation of the Constantinople Patriarchate), there were numerous examples of Macedonian archbishops traveling to the royal courts of Europe seeking support for rebellions and other assistance against the Ottoman Turkish rulers.
Macedonian Jews in the "Yad Vashem" Museum (in Jerusalem) are recorded as Bulgarian Jews
In the course of World War II, the Bulgarian Fascists collected over 7,200 Jews in Macedonia and surrendered them to the Germans at the Nazi Concentration Camps in Treblinka. This was indeed a sad time for Macedonia. Sadder and stranger however is the fact that in "Yad Vashem", the largest Jewish Museum in Jerusalem, these Jews are recorded as "Bulgarian Jews".
To the Students of Ancient History
Students, as per your request, I have provided adequate citations for the quotes published in the previous article ("To the students of Ancient Macedonian History" 5/29/2009). Bloggers should have a field day; there is enough ammo to last you for a long, long time. Use it as you see it fit. On this note, I would like to remind you also that under my RSS Feed at the American Chronicle under "Inappropriate Comments by a Distinguished Professor" you will find my answer to Professor Miller's invectives against Macedonia and the Macedonian people. (http://www.americanchronicle.cam/articles/view/93881 Mon, 09 Mar 2009)
Making Sense of the Modern Greek Mentality
As a Macedonian born in Greece I am well aware of Greece´s denials of the existence of the Macedonian identity and language, something that has existed since Greece occupied and annexed Macedonian lands in 1912, 1913. I have enough examples in my own experience alone, to fill a book. Greeks did not only deny our existence but did everything in their power to discourage us from wanting to be who we are, Macedonians. Macedonians have been beaten, fed castor oil, slapped around, fined and even jailed for speaking Macedonian, the only language they knew. Macedonians have been jailed in concentration camps and even killed for having the courage to say that they were Macedonian.
Macedonian is not Greece´s business
Once again, the forefront for dissemination of the Greek version of history in Australia, the so-called Advisory Council, who are neither Macedonians nor have any clue about advising, have managed to show their ugly head by attacking Victor Friedman, a prominent and well respected academic scholar from University of Chicago, for speaking the truth about the Macedonian language.
Blame the Greek System not the people
For a long time I have observed and once in a while have reported on the specifics of some of the Greek people´s "disgraceful" behaviour towards the Macedonians; but can one blame the people for doing what they were taught by their educational system?
Macedonia in Ottoman Times - Religion and nationality
IT WAS NOT a sense of ethnicity or nationalism driving the Ottoman Empire, but religion. ´Their law was a religious code, their army a force which conquered in the name of a faith.´ Basic categories in the Ottoman Empire were based on religious groups. There were Muslims, the ´believers´, and others, the ´non-believers´. Ottoman society was organized according to religion, and as everyone necessarily belonged to a religious community, all citizens were considered to be a part of a 'nationality' known as millet.
Where did we lose our country? – United we stand
It is not so much that we are not united as much as it is that we are being constantly pulled apart by our enemies. Many non-Macedonians have said that as a community we appear well organized and perhaps better organized than most communities. There may even be more Macedonian patriots, percentage wise, than there are in non-Macedonian communities. But unlike many communities the Macedonians are constantly tested and pulled apart. At home they are told they are Macedonians, in school they are taught that "Macedonians" don´t exist and depending on the time and place, they are told that they are "barbarians", "Slavs", "Turks", "Bulgarians", "Serbians", "Greeks", "Skopjans", etc.
The little Dictionary had no chance
Ever wonder why the Greeks behave the way they do? Ever tried or wanted to try to explain this "Greek behaviour"? I have, unfortunately for various reasons, not taken the time to do so. But after reading the following chapter in J.S.G. Gandeto´s book "The Theft of a King Who Stole Alexander" I didn´t have to, my friend Joe has done a wonderful job of eloquently "pegging the Greeks just right" in a way that I could only dream of doing!
Where did we lose our country? – External support
Another factor that has tremendously contributed to losing our country to our neighbours is our inability to gain support from other nations, people and the Great Powers.
People of Macedonia in Ottoman Times - Macedonians - The contested majority
An overview of the ethnic structure of Macedonia is presented in this article, together with population statistics and ethnographic data as promoted by interested parties from the Balkans and from the wider Europe. Ethnographic maps in particular were a powerful tool used by the Balkan states to convince Western Europe of the presence of their respective populations in Europe, whilst at the same time a politically motivated contest for religious and educational expansion was being waged in Macedonia. In a crucial period during the development of Macedonian identity towards the end of the nineteenth century, that identity was being challenged and disputed simultaneously within countryside villages of the Bitola region and the major capitals of western Europe – for the sake of territorial gain.
The Theft of a King - Who Stole Alexander
Gandeto's aim of this work is to present to his readers the other side of the story, the one that 19th century European intellectuals have forgotten to tell, or purposefully neglected to mention in their portrayal of the Macedonians. Gandeto has attempted, with no heed to political correctness, to simply tell our Macedonian view of the events that have taken place in the last few centuries and to show how these events affected the Macedonian people in general and their existence in particular. The various topics that Gandeto has covered and discussed with his opponents represent his views only; his heartfelt feelings and frustrations about the Macedonian plight that to many of you, was, and still is, terra incognita.
Where did we lose our country? – Open Organizations
Another factor that has contributed to losing our country to our neighbours is our inability to organize ourselves well because of the constant interference from our enemies. A Frenchman once serving in Macedonia declared that if he had enough gold pieces he would be able to turn every living Macedonian into a Frenchman!
International Day at CFB Borden – March 10, 2011
International Day is put on twice a year by CFB Borden to honour the countries that participate in the CFB Borden School for foreign military personnel studying English. And as one Canadian organizing officer put it during the last event, "It is an activity for the students to organize and participate in." But I must say that it is more than just an activity and an exercise in organizing, especially for the people who attend the event regularly. For them it is a bi-annual International festival with shows, dancers, performers and a rich cuisine with foods originating from around the world. And it is all free.
People have the right to know!
In my last week´s (February 26, 2011) article "How serious is Greece about the negotiations?" I revealed wikileaks information that the Macedonian side had in fact proposed changes to Macedonia´s name. A few days later a letter (contained further down in this article) to the United Nations signed by Antonio Miloshoski on February 16th, 2011 which appears to verify that information, was made public.
How serious is Greece about the negotiations?
On the surface it would appear that the Greeks in authority are pretty serious about the name and are hard at work "negotiating" with Macedonian authorities to find a "mutually acceptable" solution. At least that is my understanding according to an article published on January 25th, 2011 in the Macedonian online website which quotes Greece´s Prime Minister saying "I am not an optimist over the prospects for swift settlement of the name dispute with FYR Macedonia. The other side refuses to accept a name with geographical qualifier for all uses. The Greek positions and initiatives in the issue are stable and constant. We will not stop in our efforts to find a mutually acceptable solution. We have a national strategy and clearly drawn red lines," said Papandreou while presenting the country's foreign-policy objectives.
Where did we lose our country? - Mistaken beliefs
In all the interviews that I conducted and stories I heard, Macedonians were great at relating their accounts the way they experienced them but very few could explain why these things happened to them and who and what was responsible for these life changing experiences. Unfortunately we also have a tendency to write things down the way we see, hear and experience them without analyzing or giving much thought as to why things happen the way they do.
Where did we lose our country? – The people
Greeks claim that "there are no Macedonian people in an ethnic sense", "Macedonians do not exist"! The people that live in geographic Macedonia are "geographical Macedonians" or non-ethnic Macedonians who live in geographic Macedonia! According to the same Greeks, the so-called "geographical Macedonians" now live in four parts of Macedonia and belong to a variety of ethnicities. Those who live in the Greek part of Macedonia are "Greeks". Those who live in the Bulgarian part of Macedonia are "Bulgarians" and those who live in the Albanian part of Macedonia are "Albanians". However those who live in the Republic of Macedonia, formerly the part of Macedonia that was occupied by Serbia, according to the same Greeks, are "Slavs", "Albanians", "Bulgarians", "Serbians", "Turks", "Vlachs", "Greeks", "Roma", "Jews" and an admixture of other ethnicities. Even though very few Greeks were registered in the last Republic of Macedonia census and those who were registered were businessmen who had recently settled in the Republic of Macedonia, Greeks still insist that over 100,000 Greeks live in Pelagonia alone. Pelagonia is a region which, according to the same Greeks, belonged to ancient Macedonia and since ancient Macedonia belongs to Modern Greece then naturally they are Greeks! Is Greece making this claim so that some day it can annex Pelagonia for itself? Or is Greece doing this to cause trouble for the Republic of Macedonia by demanding human rights for a non existent "Greek" identity?
Where did we lose our country? – To whom does Macedonia Belong?
If at the start of the 19th century Macedonia was occupied by the Ottomans and was seen as not belonging to the Ottomans after 600 years of occupation, then to whom did Macedonia belong? Did it belong to Greece, Serbia, Bulgaria and Albania? Based on what legitimate grounds? Greece, Serbia, Bulgaria and Albania were modern countries either just created or in the case of Albania, about to be created! So, considering how Macedonia was to be "divided" according to pre-Balkan War agreements and how it actually was divided first during the First Balkan War, second during the Second Balkan War, by the 1913 Treaty of Bucharest and finally by the Treaty of Versailles, is proof that there was absolutely no legitimate basis for its division! It was simply an arbitrary division; history is very clear on that!
Where did we lose our country? – Rumours, Lies and Innuendoes
Ever since Greek, Serbian and Bulgarian influence infiltrated Macedonia in the late 1800´s, our brightest minds have been victims of our neighbours. If they could not "bribe" them with a free education and a chance to fill their heads with anti-Macedonian propaganda, they would try spreading rumours, lies and innuendoes about them to vilify them and tarnish their reputation. If that did not work, they would torment them and make their young lives miserable. Some would flee in exile and the unlucky would be detained, jailed, or executed outright on trumped up charges. Our history is full of such examples!
Where did we lose our country? - Introduction
The Macedonian people were not only aware of the name Macedonia but have always had an historic connection to it. Macedonia and its past glory have always existed and will continue to exist in the narrative of the Macedonian people. Also, the Macedonian people, unlike any of the other people in the Balkans, were a nation with a large majority having a well developed Macedonian national consciousness before they had a country. Looking at this from another angle, there are many reasons why the Macedonian people should have had their own country a long time ago. Yet it did not happen! Why not? And you are right, as long as this subject remains a mystery, our history will be incomplete. And worse, as long as we are not aware of our past mistakes, we are bound to repeat them!
Who are the Greeks - a Macedonian Perspective
I would have to say that, as a general rule, it is none of my business to gossip about people unless of course they give me reason to. Believe me the Greeks have given me plenty of reasons to not only to analyze them forwards and backwards without feeling guilty, but to talk about them as I see fit. In fact I would go as far as saying, "It is imperative to know thy Greeks as seen through the eyes of at least one Macedonian!"
Getting to know thy Greece
One of the obstacles I was faced with in the past was convincing people that things are not right in Greece, especially when it came to human rights. Even the people who were willing to lend an ear found it difficult to believe what I had told them. How could one people be so cruel towards another in a peace loving, democratic country such as Greece? That is impossible! People in modern democratic countries don´t behave this way in this day and age? I am certain many felt that perhaps there was something wrong with me. Although no one, besides the Greeks themselves, ever told me that they didn´t believe me, I had the feeling that it was going to be a rough road to travel. Fortunately for me I didn´t have to do a lot of convincing. Greece did all that for me, first when it went out of its way to make life difficult for the Macedonians in the Republic of Macedonia by refusing to recognize them as Macedonians and their country as Macedonia and then by the way it got itself into its current economic crisis.
The Inform-Bureau and the Refugee Children from the Aegean part of Macedonia 1948 – 1956
The Macedonian exodus from Greece, as a consequence of war and repressive Greek regimes, falls in the order of the most tragic ethnic cleansings perpetrated against a people in the latest history of Europe. Because of the realization of the "Megali Idea" (greater Greece), that is Greece´s expansion in the 20th century to include Macedonian territories, the Macedonians from the Aegean part of Macedonia, a part of Macedonia that was given to Greece during the Balkan Wars, were exposed to physical and emotional repression. This, through various forms and through various intensities, has not changed with time and has lasted to this day. The Greek aim here has been to depersonalize and denominate the Macedonian population and its national identity through permanent Hellenization, to never allow the exiled citizens who do not have a Greek ethnic background to return to Greece and to usurp Macedonia´s history and call it Greek.
Gathering of Refugee Children in the Republic of Macedonia and other parts of the World
Members of the Child Refugees from the Greek Civil War evacuated in the spring of 1948, now fully integrated adults in the Republic of Macedonia and other parts of the world are organizing World Gatherings and meetings for anniversaries of their evacuation. Their activities, not only in the Republic of Macedonia but in countries all over the world wherever these "Refugee Children" live, are a reflection of their "displacement" and a wish to once again return to their native Macedonia, even for a visit.
Organized persecution and massacre of the Macedonian Population in KukushRegion
The Macedonian people, during the course of their long history, have experienced many wars, suffering, organized persecutions and massacres. At the beginning of the last century, during the First and especially during the Second Balkan War, the Greek army conducted organized persecutions and massacres against the Macedonian population in the southeastern part of Macedonia, particularly in the Kukush and Demir-Hisar Regions. The atrocities that took place in Kukush and the surrounding villages nearly a century ago, even today, leave us horrified. And that, in the mind of every normal person, pacifist by conviction or not, who has happened to learn about the fate of the people of Kukush, underscores in our minds the idea that such horrors must never be repeated again.
Integration of the Macedonians from the Aegean part of Macedonia into the Macedonian Community
The Macedonians like many other people in this world, during the course of their history, had the unfortunate fate of being divided, resettled and negated. It took decades for them to free themselves of the feeling of uncertainty and that only happened after the formation of a Macedonian state, first as part of the Former Yugoslav Federation and later, after 1991, as an independent Macedonian state.
Macedonia of the future
How is Macedonia positioning itself for the future? Are we building bridges with China? Are we building bridges with Israel for technology and military intelligence? Is Euro Zone still the goal (should it be, since China will soon be more powerful than all combined?) Since Greek business owners continue to increase their ownership hold on Macedonia, will we counter this by creating entrepreneurship programs/ investing in infrastructure etc.
Macedonians, have we reached a new low?
There was a time when our enemies killed us, tortured us, put us in jail, exiled us and took our homes and lands, humiliated us, changed our names, banned our language and attempted to assimilate us on our own lands and in our own country where we were born. Many of us left that old racist world in hopes of saving ourselves, our souls, our dignity and our national identity. But today it seems that there is no place where we can go to hide where our identity, our language and our existence can be secured. It seems to me that there is no longer a place where we can go, where we can feel safe and where we can be at peace.
Is history of a people important?
There are people out there, Macedonians included among them, who believe that history is not important for people to carry on with their lives; so why would it be important for countries?
Macedonia´s Recognition - What will it mean to the world?
For the sake of curiosity let us look into the future and try to imagine an all out unconditionally "recognized" Macedonia and what it will mean to the world.
Macedonia – My Second Visit
After visiting Macedonia for the first time in the summer of 2008, I promised many of my friends, especially those with whom I could not visit with for long that I would come back in two years. True to my word, I departed for Macedonia on August 22nd, 2010 and returned to Canada on September 24th. I figured this time a month would be enough time in contrast to the seventeen days that I was there last time. Unfortunately, even a month was not enough as this time I had many more friends to visit and as hard as I tried to be with everyone, I still missed some. Again, I had to promise many that I would return in two years. Many of my readers asked me to write about my current visit to Macedonia so, not to disappoint I will, but this time I will give you only a summary.
Macedonians, why are we selling ourselves short?
Let us for a moment look at the facts! There is no denying that Macedonia is a country which existed by that name for over three millenniums. As far as our collective Macedonian memory can recollect the Macedonian people of today are indigenous to Macedonia and have been there for many millenniums. There is nothing in our narrative to lead us to believe any differently.
Patterns are emerging
After what I have read, seen, and heard I am beginning to lose faith in our Western educational system to candidly deliver the goods. Case in point is Greece´s denial that Macedonians exist when in fact they do exist! But we know why Greece is doing this; purely for self interests. But why are France and other Western European countries following in Greece´s footsteps?
Falsity of Greece vs Reality of Macedonia
On many occasions we have looked at Greece from the outside in, the way outsiders and insiders of non-Greek origin perceive it. But we have yet to look at Greece from the inside, the way it sees itself. What makes Greece, Greece and Greeks, Greeks and what makes them claim that they are "pure" and "homogeneous"? In this article we will examine the conditions under which Greece became or claims to have become "pure" and "homogeneous" and what it has done and is doing to protect its claims.
Tsotsev Kamen – The Undiscovered Prehistoric Observatory
I had never heard of Tsotsev Kamen until I arrived in Macedonia, for my second trip, on August 23rd, 2010 and met with Odi Belchevski in Skopje. He informed me that he had made contact with Dr. Dushko Aleksovski and we were invited to go and visit a couple of archeological sites; one of them being the Kokino prehistoric observatory.
International Day at CFB Borden – Sep 30, 2010
Many thanks to Canada and the Canadian Military for creating International Day at CFB Borden which gives the various multi-ethnic communities in the surrounding region the opportunity to come together under one roof and celebrate their cultures.
Are Greeks for Real?
Despite the numerous articles I have written expressing my understanding of the Modern Greeks, there are Greeks out there, defying logic and common sense, who still believe or pretend to believe that they are descendents of the so-called "ancient Greeks"! How do I know this? They send me e-mails to let me know and say they want to "educate" me about their glorious heritage. Unfortunately their attempts to "educate" me don´t end there; some Greeks cannot pass up the opportunity to take a jab, to grind some salt, to let me know how "Slavic" I am and how I have nothing to do with being Macedonian!
Greek plans to secure Macedonia
In the past I have given my readers hints of Greek plans to secure Macedonia but I have yet to elaborate on them. By "securing" Macedonia I am talking about Greece striving to maintain ownership of the 51% of Macedonia it annexed in 1913 and having aspirations to annex more in the future.
Macedonian flags fly in front of the Canadian Parliament - CELEBRATING ILINDEN 2010
Ilinden is a Macedonian National Holiday celebrated annually on August 2nd to commemorate the 1903 Macedonian national Uprising against the Ottoman Empire.
Why negotiating with Greece is bad for Macedonia!
First and foremost, Macedonia should not be negotiating with Greece over its own name even if Greece was its brother and best friend! But setting that aside, what message does Macedonia give the world when it willingly enters a process to negotiate a change to its own name to please Greece, one country which amounts to less than 1% of the world´s countries and a fraction of the world population, so small that I don´t even know how to describe it!
How to End the "Name Game"
Almost two decades have passed and there is still no sign of a resolution being reached in the so-called "name negotiations" between Greece and the Republic of Macedonia. In this article I will attempt to define what Greece is asking for and the compromises that the Republic of Macedonia has already made.
Ilinden 2010
Every year around this time I am compelled to write something about Ilinden to remind myself and my readers of what it´s all about. To remind us all of our never ending struggles and sacrifices we made as people and to remind us of the sacrifices our not so distant ancestors made when on August 2nd, 1903 they rose en masse to fight for liberty and to form a Macedonian state.
Why am I doing this – again?
Despite my explanations a few times before, there are readers out there, mostly Greeks, who still want to know "why I am doing this" and by "this" they mean why do I write "negative things" about Greece and the Greeks. To them I say, show me something "good" that Greece and the Greeks have done for the Macedonians and then I will write something "positive"! Ah but wait a minute aren´t we forgetting something? Aren´t the Greeks the ones who claim that the whole world knows that "Macedonians do not exist"! So, what Macedonians am I talking about?
The "Blame game" another Old Greek Trick!
Just recently I received a phone call from a very disappointed Macedonian activist who complained to me about another Macedonians activist, both of whom I shall not name, who said that among others I, Risto Stefov, am "somehow" responsible for Macedonians living in Greece, you know the non-existent ones, losing their pension because of the articles I write that constantly criticize Greece! Yes, you heard it right! Some senior citizens of Macedonian descent living in "democratic" Greece today have been informed that they may no longer be receiving their pensions because people like me have ruined it for them with the constant criticism of Greece!
Macedonia: Ethnic or Geographic?
Ethnic or geographic Macedonia, which will it be? There are many Macedonians out there even today who refer to partitioned Macedonia as Aegean, Vardar, Pirin and more recently, Mala Prespa. Are these references a "good thing" or are they "anti-Macedonian" and we don´t even know it?
The West we Trust?
Not so long ago I ran into a Macedonian who I have known for a while and in our discussions he mentioned something that stayed with me. He said he does not trust the Greeks, Serbians or Bulgarians being objective when writing about Macedonia, which was fine by me but when he said that he also didn´t trust the Macedonians to do the same, I found that disturbing. This however is not the first or only time I have heard this.
Old habits never die
After proving to the Greeks a hundred times over, that Macedonians do exist and have existed since Neolithic times or as my friend Tone from Slovenia would say "the Macedonians lived in Macedonia uninterrupted for at least 40,000 if not 70,000 or even 100,000 years!", we still have Greeks "insisting" that Macedonians do not exist and the only Macedonians that can identify as Macedonians are Greeks who live in Macedonia and speak Greek!
If not Euro-Atlantic integration, what then?
Western Europe over the last few decades or so has been popularized as the "democratic panacea" of all times offering "equal rights" to all people of all colours and flavours but as things are shaping up, that is not the case. Western Europe may look good on paper and in theory but in practice it is the same old "racist Europe" it always was.
Why Greece can´t have minorities!
We often speak of Greece refusing to recognize its various national minorities living in Greece but we rarely speak about why that is. Now, I think is a good time to examine the issue more closely.
Does Modern Greece deserve to exist?
Who decides if Macedonians do or do not exist? The Greeks and Bulgarians? If that is the case then it is only fair and reasonable that the Macedonians decide if Greeks and Bulgarians exist and if they deserve to have their own countries!
Ah Greece what have you done to deserve this?
During 1989 to 1993, the Greek Foreign Ministry, headed by Andonis Samaras, used a secret fund to pay Greek journalists $130 million dollars (US) to promote the "Greek-ness" of Macedonia! Although these funds were originally intended for external promotion, according to the testimony of former Prime Minister Constantinos Mitsotakis, they ended up in the pockets of Greek journalists.
"Ancient versus Slav Controversy"
Just for the record, let me say this; "Macedonians don´t need outsiders, particularly their enemies, to tell them who they are; Macedonians are Macedonians and have been so since the word Macedonia was coined and believe me, that goes far back beyond ´Ancient times´."
The so-called "Name Negotiations" MUST be ended now!
In spite of what has been said and done and the warnings and pleading made by so many Macedonian activists to end the so called "name negotiations" with Greece, the comical tragedy still continues to unfold for almost two decades now. How long are the Macedonian authorities going to allow it to go on? How long are we Macedonians going to bend backwards to please our enemies?
There is no Greater Glory than to be a Soldier of Macedonia
While fighting against its opponents, the Macedonian army demonstrated bravery, skill, discipline, determination and performed extraordinary achievements deemed impossible by ordinary men. They carried out feats like passing through impassible terrain in record time, fighting much superior opponents and winning, scaling un-scalable walls, fast marching through monsoons, etc., which gave the impression that these Macedonian soldiers were "super human".
Polyaenus – 2nd Century Macedonian Rhetorician
It is time for us to take hold of our heritage and let our destiny takes its course, we are Macedonians, we were Macedonians since the term was coined because we are a product of Macedonia the very land that made us who we are and we will always be Macedonians no matter what our enemies tell us and in spite of their objections. We are who we are and calling us different or demanding that we change our name or our identity will change nothing; we will remain who we are. Enough with the lies and deception! You haven´t changed us in two centuries what makes you think that you can succeed now?
Greeks and Bulgarians -Yesterday's bitter enemies today's best friends
Just recently someone handed me a Bulgarian newspaper and pointed to the headline; "Bulgarian-Greek Cultural event" with the Bulgarian flag on the left and the Greek flag on the right. Wow! I never thought in my lifetime I would see the words "Bulgarian", "Greek" and "together" in a friendly way in the same sentence. The world is indeed changing and from what I gather, for the better. I hope!
Greeks and Identity theft
Greece, the vary country which illegally and by an act of war annexed 51% of Macedonia in 1913, as confirmed by the 1913 Treaty of Bucharest, was the first to not only protest to Macedonia´s independence, but after trying to bury the name "Macedonian" for a century, protested to its use by the Republic of Macedonia, claiming that the very name "Macedonia" is Greek!
Greek by Politics
Up until recently a person could not have been a Greek unless they were born Greek. In fact the Greek government, in the early 1980´s, passed a law designed to repatriate all Greeks born in Greece who had left Greece and were Greeks by birth. But wait a minute here, hasn´t Greece being boasting that since 1928 Greece has been populated by 98% pure Greeks and 2% Muslim Greeks? So, who did they intend to exclude by passing that law? Everyone should have been allowed to return because, according to their own claims, everyone in Greece is Greek.
How Macedonia became Greek, Serbian and Bulgarian
Greece does not hesitate to claim Macedonia as its own but shies away from explaining how Macedonia became "Greek". Please read this article and find out.
The Problem with Human Rights
Greece does not hesitate to demand human rights for "Greeks" everywhere in the world, even though the so called "Greek ethnicity" is nothing more than a 19th century fabrication, and while it shamelessly promotes itself as "the cradle of democracy" it stomps on the rights of its minority citizens living on its own soil! What kind of democracy will not recognize its minorities and strip them of all their human rights? The so called Greek democracy does! There are people in Greece today who are Macedonians, Albanians, Vlachs, Turks, Roma and others who Greece adamantly claims do not exist.
Human Rights Violations in Greece
Greece does not hesitate to demand human rights for "Greeks" in every country in the world and while it shamelessly promotes itself as "the cradle of democracy" it stomps on the rights of its minority citizens! What kind of democracy will not recognize its minorities and strip them of all their human rights? Greek democracy does! There are people in Greece today who call themselves Macedonians, Albanians, Vlachs, Turks, Roma and others who Greece adamantly claims do not exist.
About the Greek Language
Greece does not hesitate to call the Macedonian language "non existent" and a mix of Serbian and Bulgarian but have they ever looked at their own language? I don´t think so, because if they did then they would be less critical of other peoples´ languages.
Another International Day at CFB Borden
Many thanks to Canada and the Canadian Military for creating International Day at CFB Borden which gives the various multi-ethnic communities in the surrounding region the opportunity to come together under one roof and celebrate their cultures.
Greece is not the Cradle of Democracy
Greece has shamelessly promoted itself as "the cradle of democracy" while practicing the worst kind of dictatorships and cultural genocide the world has even seen! What kind of democracy will not recognize its minorities and strip them of all their human rights? Greece does! There are people in Greece today who call themselves Macedonians, Albanians, Vlachs, Turks, Roma and others who Greece adamantly claims don´t exist.
Assimilation of Macedonians Continues
Assimilation of Macedonians on a massive scale began right after Macedonia was invaded, occupied and partitioned in 1912, 1913 when Greece, Serbia and Bulgaria established a foothold in Macedonian territories. In Greece, for example, Macedonians were told: "as of this point forward this is Greece and you are Greeks and if you don´t like it you have 24 hours to pack your things and take whatever you can carry on your backs and get out". Many Macedonian left and eventually ended up in the USA, Canada and Australia.
What do you really mean when you say you are "Greek"?
Until yesterday most Greeks loathed the word "Macedonia" and put people like me in jail for just uttering it. Now the haters of Macedonia have become the lovers of Macedonia. Have these Greeks gone topsy-turvy? Have they forgotten how they acquired Macedonia and how they attempted to choke the life out of it? No matter how hard these Greeks try to hide the truth there is always someone out there who will expose it!
Happy 138th Birthday Gotse Delchev
Who was Gotse Delchev (1872-1903) and what did he do for Macedonia and for the Macedonian people? Please read this article to find out.
The name alone was never an issue
Greece, for almost a century, has been struggling to smother the Macedonian identity living on its own soil since it illegally invaded, occupied and annexed Macedonian lands. Then all of a sudden an entire nation of Macedonians gained their independence just next door. Panic stricken, not knowing what to do, Greece invented a problem in hopes of putting the Macedonians on the defensive.
After two centuries of living a myth Greece now faces reality
When Greece was created for the first time in 1829 there were no "real Greeks". The entire region was populated mostly by Albanians, Turks, Slavs, Vlachs, Latin and a long list of other ethnicities that existed in that region at that time. The vast majority of the people living in the tiny Greek state at the time of its liberation from the Ottomans were uneducated and unfamiliar with the concepts of nationality and ethnicity. As far as they were concerned they were all Christians which distinguished them from the Muslims, their overlords. After their liberation all Christians in the Greek state, regardless of their ethnicities, were told they were Greek. This continued as Greece expanded its territory and acquired more and more people.
About the Slavs; Again!
According to some Greeks the "Slavs" are a people who came to Macedonia on mass from some swamps north of the Danube River. When they arrived in Macedonia in the 6th century AD they killed off the indigenous Macedonians and repopulated Macedonia. The "Slavs" however, for some unknown reason, did not enter Greece because those same Greeks who claim, Macedonians are "Slavs" also claim Modern Greece is populated by pure Greeks, descendants of the so called "Ancient Greeks", implying that the "Slavs" never crossed the Greek border. But where is the proof?
Macedonian Toponyms in Albania
Macedonians have been in the Balkans a lot longer and in a lot more places than previously anticipated. Proof of this can be found not only in history but in language and toponymia, in the Macedonian archaic footsteps left behind.
Cause of Greek Fears and Paranoia
Modern Greece, for the last decade and a half or so, has been acting strange particularly towards the Republic of Macedonia and the Macedonian people! Why? What is this all about? No matter how hard Greeks try to hide the truth and their actions against the Macedonians there is always someone out there who will expose them!
