Canadian Train Ride - 2005
Trains are a wonderful means of transportation. If one looks around and pays attention, a train journey can often become the destination, and arrival can feel like an interruption. In Canada people often (more so than in America) take trains to travel between its large cities. In 2005, on a train ride from Toronto to Cornwall, I observed Canadians and tied my thoughts back to my other travels. I visited my childhood when summertime meant riding the great trains of India north to south, through dry-river valleys, lush farms, and semi-arid coasts.
An International City
Lazy words like international, multi-cultural, and diverse, when used to describe cities, often mask the undercurrents that exist beneath the veneer accorded by convenient terms. Geneva, a city in French Switzerland, is glamorized by the presence of various multi-lateral and globally oriented agencies and bureaucracies. Do the people that live and work in this city match or even realize its lofty image? Or do they take it in stride, while working to create a truly cosmopolitan urban mileu? Read on.
