Hollywood Master Chorale presents Beethoven and Beyond
For the first time in its 16 year history, the Hollywood Master Chorale invites two musical organizations - the Ebell Chorale & Los Angeles Doctors Symphony - to join it in "Beethoven and Beyond." Works include Beethoven's Fantasia for Piano, Chorus, and Orchestra and Bernstein's Chichester Psalms. Young rising piano virtuoso Esther Keel and boy soprano Caleb Glickman appear as guest soloists.
Pacific Serenades presents 102nd premiere, joining nationwide chamber music consortium
Pacific Serenades joins a nationwide chamber music consortium to present the premiere of Gabriela Lena Frank's Rapsodia Andina, inspired by ancient Peruvian textiles. Also on the program are works by Haydn and Ravel, plus Pacific Serenade by Miguel del Aguila, which received its World Premiere with Pacific Serenades in 1998. Performers are JoAnn Turovsky, harp; Mark Carlson, flute; Gary Gray, clarinet; violinists Tereza Stanislav and Connie Kupka; Robert Brophy, viola; and David Speltz, cello. Concerts will take place in LA, Pasadena and at UCLA.

Around The World In 80 Minutes
Pasadena Young Musicians Orchestra presents Around the World In 80 Minutes, a musical journey that visits Germany, Russia, the Middle East, Africa, Mexico and the United States. Works performed will include the Candide Overture by Bernstein, Symphony No. 35 "Haffner" by Mozart, the Berceuse and Finale from The Firebird by Stravinsky, and Marquez´s Danzon No. 2, plus PYMO will also accompany the Northridge Singers for a performance of the first movement of Brahms´ German Requiem. Rounding out the program is an a cappella performance by the choir of works by Rachmaninoff.

Pacific Serenades presents its 101st World Premiere of a new work by an LA-based composer: Piano Quintet 5 X 5 by Eric Charnofsky. Also on the program are Mozart´s Piano Trio in B Flat Major, K. 502 and Piano Quintet No. 1 in C minor, Op. 1 by Ernö Dohnanyi. Guest artists include Roger Wilkie, violin; Miwako Watanabe, violin; David Walther, viola; David Speltz, cello; and Edith Orloff, piano. Pacific Serenades celebrates its 25th anniversary & 100th world premiere at "25/100". The new work, Duarte's Love Songs, is written by Roger Bourland, who was commissioned to write the renowned chamber ensemble's 1st world premiere. Guest artists include baritone Vladimir Chernov, violinist Roger Wilke, cellist David Speltz & pianist Robert Thies. Works performed include Prokofiev's Five Melodies, Arensky's Piano Trio in D minor and a selection of Russian songs.

Mozart never completed the lively opera Zaide but now, 230 years later, fellow Austrian Martin Haselböck "evens" the score, ingeniously interweaving the singspiel with other, complimentary works by Mozart. The Pasadena Young Musicians Orchestra presents "The Orchestra Dances." Works performed will include Huapango by Jose Pablo Moncayo, Symphonic Dances by Sergei Rachmaninov and Samuel Barber´s Adagio for Strings. Also on the program is Vertigo Steps, a new work commissioned by PYMO from young Pasadena composer Alex Lu.
The Right Keys at the Right Time
When asked about his virtuosity on the organ and harpsichord, J.S. Bach once famously replied, "There´s nothing remarkable about it. All one has to do is hit the right keys at the right time, and the instrument plays itself." Music lovers, however, may differ with the composer´s blithe dismissal of his talent – and find themselves more in agreement with Ludwig van Beethoven´s assessment of Bach as "the immortal god of harmony" – when they attend Musica Angelica Baroque Orchestra´s chamber concert, "Bach Songs and Organ Works." Two performances will take place: on Saturday, January 15 at 8 p.m. at Neighborhood Church in Pasadena and Sunday, January 16, at 3 p.m. at St. Matthew´s Episcopal Church in Pacific Palisades.

Renowned Cornell Glee Club to visit Southern California, thanks to Pasadena Master Chorale
The renowned Cornell Glee Club will visit Southern California, performing with the Pasadena Master Chorale. The program will include performances by both the Pasadena Master Chorale and the Cornell Glee Club. PMC will sing the "Introit" and "Kyrie" from Mozart´s Requiem, K. 626. Soloists will include soprano Lauren Buckley and pianist Renee Gilormini. Bernstein will conduct. The Cornell Glee Club will then present all-male choral music from a variety of cultures, ranging from compositions from the European Renaissance to folk music of the Americas.

The Pasadena Master Chorale presents the World Premiere of "Life of Mozart," a production featuring excerpts from the composer's famous Requiem plus readings from his letters. Jorge Mester, Music Director of the Louisville Symphony and Naples Philharmonic, will conduct; Dan Selon will portray Mozart. The program will also include works written during the last year of Mozart's life. "I wanted to find a way to tell the story of this man and this work…and, in so doing, to humanize the music and make it more accessible. I think audiences love to understand a work of music in the context of its composer's life," says Artistic Director Jeffrey Bernstein, who conceived the project.

The Opera Buffs presents its Fall Performers Showcase featuring sopranos Tracy Cox, Jacquelynne Fontaine, and Karen Vuong, tenor Christian Sanders, baritone Joseph Lim and bass Gabriel Vamvulescu. On the program for "We Love the Opera" are staged excerpts from such operas as The Barber of Seville (Rossini), Macbeth (Verdi), The Magic Flute (Mozart), Madama Butterfly (Puccini), and the Queen of Spades (Tchaikovsky). Verdi Chorus to present Wagner & Verdi: Opposing Roads to Greatness as part of Ring Festival LA
The Verdi Chorus will present Wagner and Verdi: Opposing Roads to Greatness, on May 1 and May 2, as part of the Ring Festival LA. "Giuseppi Verdi and Richard Wagner were both born in the year 1813, one Italian and one German," explains Music Director Anne Marie Ketchum."Both are considered the greatest composers of opera of their time. And while their musical language differs greatly, both were great men of the theater. Our goal is to celebrate the genius of both men." Works the Verdi Chorus will perform include excerpts from Tannhauser, Parsifal, Die Meistersinger and Der Fliegende Holländer (The Flying Dutchman) by Wagner, as well as Don Carlo, Il Trovatore, and Aida by Verdi. Soloists joining the 50-member chorus include soprano Erin Wood, mezzo-soprano Cynthia Jansen, tenor Shem von Schroeck and baritone In Joon Jang.
