Could the crime of the century be a fraud?
Was Bernard Madoff a scam artist who effectively pretended to be a good friend and committed member of his community for decades while he was actually robbing his friends blind? Or could it be that he really is committed to his friends and has confessed to fraud so they can recoup the money he lost for them in the market?
The government insures against fraud, not against bad markets. Is Madoff playing US for suckers?

A malfunctioning rifle leads to criminal conviction on machinegun charges.
ATF and Federal Prosecutors bend over backwards to make sure that the owner of the rifle is punished, regardless of important, exculpatory facts that they concealed from the court.
The case sets a dangerous prosecutorial precedent that places all gunowners at risk since the Government contended that any gun that fires more than one shot with one pull of the trigger is a machinegun, even a double-barreled shotgun that malfunctions and fires both barrels at once.
