The origins of the area rugs begin in the unlikeliest of all places: in 1949, a Russian archeologist unearthed a rug in Siberia, now referred to as the Pazyryk rug. The knotted pile of carpet was found in a burial mound that was covered in ice, and radiocarbon testing dated the rug to the fifth century B.C.
