A new term recently entered the medical arena, ASIA, or autoimmune inflammatory syndrome induced by adjuvants, sometimes called Shoenfeld's syndrome.
Adjuvants are additives included in vaccines to cause the immune system to respond more strongly. They may include things like aluminum, thimerosal (mercury), and squalene. These adjuvants have been associated with defined and non-defined immune mediated diseases in both animal and human models. In extreme cases, a potentially deadly cytokine storm may be possible.

Reader Question: I was poisoned by solvents and developed multiple chemical sensitivity. I´ve adapted quite well, but my spouse is having difficulty changing his ways. He thinks he is not complete without cologne and my doctor said I must avoid the toxic chemicals colognes and fragrances contain if I want to get well again. Last month, we examined testimonials as theoretical evidence of a cure in Part 2, The Trouble with Testimonials2.
A product has more credibility when unsubstantiated cure claims are avoided. This is not to say that either alternative or conventional treatment modalities are a waste of time. Nor is it to say that science should be solely trusted either. Sham treatments may be found in both conventional and alternative medicine and are especially targeted towards those who may be disillusioned by the shortcomings and corruption often found in medical science.

Many people with environmental illnesses have an assortment of autoimmune diseases which scientists are linking to air pollution.

Online support groups are a wonderful way to connect with others who are going through, or have gone through, similar struggles with an illness. They can answer questions, address concerns, provide encouragement, share tips and referrals, discuss treatments, and be there to understand and accept the illness reality when it seems no one else will.
Most support groups are very friendly and helpful. Occasionally a group may experience conflict and strife or suffer with a webmaster or moderator who seems to have a personal agenda. One of my earlier childhood memories is an overwhelming concern with flame retardants found in pajamas. I don´t remember how I gained such knowledge at that age, but I remember carefully reading pajama labels with my parents at the store. Once a pair of pajamas was selected, my mother washed them repeatedly before I wore them. I couldn´t have been more than 4 or 5 at the time, yet I instinctively knew that it was absurd to put flame retardants in pajamas because house fires were so rare. Somehow I knew that my chances of getting injured were much greater from the flame retardants than any fire I might encounter.

Researchers at the Catholic University, Rome, Italy, report on a case of a 38-year-old woman who was diagnosed with MCS.
