Hornets Lose Nokomis Opener
Nov. 3--Cowden-Herrick 8th grade basketball started off the season with a tough draw at the Nokomis tournament, playing the host team. They lost 46-20.
In the first half all the Hornets had going for them was Brady Barnes in the middle. Barnes scored five of his seven points in the first half. Joel Wheeler added a bucket. The Hornets had trouble bringing the ball up against defense-minded Nokomis. That led to several transition points and free throws for the home team. Nokomis led at the break 21-7.
Wheeler caught fire in the third quarter for the Hornets, as they won the period 10-8 over Nokomis. Wheeler scored five of his game-high 10 points in the third. He scored on a 3-point play, but missed the free throw. He scored again on a 3-point play, then made that free throw. He rang up a trey and Barnes scored again on a two.
Despite the up tick in the Hornet offense, they only trimmed the 14-point deficit by two, trailing 29-17 to start the fourth. Nokomis smelled blood in the water and they swarmed down the stretch, going on a 17-3 run to finish the game. Nokomis shot 11-of-14 from the line in the fourth and hit two treys. The only Hornet score in the fourth was a Wheeler triple.
Cowden-Herrick 8th (0-1) plays Moulton on Wednesday in the consolation bracket at 6:15 p.m.
