Stew-Stras Lady Stars Sweep Okaw Valley

Nov. 3--The Stew-Stras Junior High girls basketball program got back to action after the NTC tournaments and they recorded a home sweep of Okaw Valley, winning the 7th grade game, 16-12, and the 8th grade game, 28-16.

The Star underclassmen were led to victory by a trinity of scorers. Hannah Gillett scored eight points, Autumn Carson scored six and Grace Schuler four points. Okaw Valley had just a duo of scorers. McClain scored seven points and Harlin five.

Okaw took an early 3-point lead after one, 5-2, but the Stars came out in the second and past up the T'Wolves by two at the break, 8-6. Stew-Stras stretched the lead to five heading into the fourth, 14-9. It was a defensive struggle last and the Stars held on for the 4-point win.

Star upperclassmen had six players score, while Okaw just three, in the double-digit Star nightcap win, 28-16.

Stew-Stras' Brittani Tabbert and Okaw's Herold tied for game-high honors, scoring ten points each. But the rest of the Stars outscored the compliment of T'wolves 18-6. Courtney Schultz, Lindsay Burton and Sarah Locke got the Stars separation with a combined 14 points. Schultz had six and Burton and Locke four each. Okaw's second scorer, dash, had four points.

The Stars, fresh off a consolation championship at the NTC 8th tourney, took an early 8-4 lead, but led just 10-8 at the break. The third period was pivotal in the win, as the Stars went on a 12-6 run to lead by eight heading into the final frame, 22-14. The Stars stiff-armed Okaw down the stretch with a 6-2 run for the 12-point "W".

Stew-Stras 7th (9-5)and 8th (8-7) host Shelbyville Moulton on Thursday.
