U.N. blames U.S. for aid cuts to Somalia

11/08/2009 7:34 PM
Starvation looms with supply line "effectively broken." U.S. fears that its shipments may be diverted to terrorists. U.N. officials said Friday that the supply of critical food aid to Somalia had been interrupted and that rations to starving people needed to be cut, partly because the U.S. government has delayed food contributions out of fears they would be diverted to terrorists. Last month, U.S. officials said they had suspended millions of dollars of food aid because of concerns that Somali contractors working for the United Nations were funneling food and money to the Shabab, an Islamist insurgent group with growing ties to Al-Qaida. U.S. officials played down the effect of the delays and said the food shipments would resume soon, onc... more

Who are the Real Pirates in Somalia?

11/08/2009 7:29 PM
Sociologist Peter Berger has instructed that "The first wisdom of Sociology is that things are not what they seem." So it is with the Western media rendition of their piracy stories from Somalia. An article in the London-based Independent newspaper has confirmed the suspicions of many that behind the Western media hysteria over on Somali pirates in the Indian Ocean and Western governments' war on "modern day piracy" lurks a sinister plot: the theft of the war-torn country's sea food and the dumping of nuclear waste in its seas by some European countries. No, this is not one of the legions of conspiracy theories concocted on a daily basis around the globe. According to the Independent's, article Western governments are cynically exploiting... more

Spy planes hunt pirates who seized British couple

11/08/2009 7:20 PM
The Nato revelations come amid growing concern for the plight of Paul and Rachel Chandler, the middle-aged British couple held by bandits after being captured on their boat 15 days ago. Reports this week claimed that they had been moved inland and were being fought over by armed rival gangs. The need for better surveillance of pirates comes as the number of attacks on ships increases and the number of hostages taken multiplies. There was a lull in hijackings during this season's monsoon, but pirates have stepped up attacks in the past few weeks and are now holding some 10 vessels and at least 187 hostages. The draft report, written by Lord Jopling, a Nato adviser, says the US Navy is flying unmanned aircraft from the Seychelles, 1,000 mil... more

Somali pirates threaten 'torture' of British sailors

11/08/2009 7:14 PM
Mainstream UK media are reporting that Somali pirates are stepping up their pressure by threatening to torture Paul and Rachel Chandler, who were kidnapped from their yacht Lynn Rival on October 23 when they disregarded advice by Seychelles authorities and fellow cruisers not to travel from Seychelles towards Africa. If true (and many reports have later proved false) this is a new development in the world of Somali pirates, who have generally treated their captives well. The pirates, who want the return of seven fellow pirates who were captured by a German warship when they attacked French fishing vessel Cape Saint Vincent, were reported as saying that the Chandlers 'would be punished' unless their comrades were freed. The couple are bin... more

IS THE SPANISH GOVERNMENT LYING TO FAMILIES, Somali pirates say Spanish captives still ashore

11/08/2009 7:10 PM
Somali pirates are holding three sailors from a Spanish fishing vessel on shore, a gang member said on Sunday, rejecting Madrid's assertion that they had been reunited with the remaining crew aboard their ship. A pirate who identified himself only as Mohamed said the return of the three to their vessel, the Alakrana, depended on the release of two pirates being held in Spain. Madrid should negotiate directly with the pirates, rather than trying to deal with the Somali government, he told Reuters by phone from the Alakrana which remains under pirate control. "No one has been returned to the ship. The reason they were originally taken to the shore was to separate them from the rest of the crew and their return aboard depends on the release... more

Somali Sufis Take on Shebab Militants

11/07/2009 8:21 PM
Somalia's main Sufi movement, Ahlu Sunna wal Jamaa, decided to declare war on Al Qaeda-inspired Al-Shabab militant group which is fighting the UN-supported interim government and African peacekeepers. "The Shabab are misguided people who have misunderstood the true values of Islam," Sheikh Sharif Sheikh Muhieddin, the overall chairman of Ahlu Sunna wal Jamaa group, told Agence France-Presse (AFP). "Now the Shebab are killing Somalis because they are not with them." Dozens of the usually quiet religious movement's leaders have in recent days converged on Nairobi from Somalia and from Western exile for a "war council" to close ranks against what they see as an existential threat. Ahlu Sunna wal Jamaa is a national Sufi movement which had ... more

The sweltering heat here is testimony to the biting season that has ravaged most of the Muslim dominated region. Painful History "We are now at the peak of another drought," said Hassan to IslamOnline.net (IOL). "The animals are dying once again. This time water is our biggest worry because most of the wells in the village have completely dried up and the remaining ones are on the verge of doing so." Kite flying activities go well beyond the physical phenomenon of wind blown materials flying tethered to their earth bound launchers. It is an activity including local knowledge of winds and landscapes, knowledge of how to physically shape the kite in order to have it fly. It is an activity that challenges the artistic creativity of the kite maker, a challenge to make the kite not only fly-worthy, but also decorative, and through that decoration, to make a statement from and about the flyer and kite maker. The statements can be several at a time, from simply being "I am the best kite maker and designer" through the many nuances of challenging others to fly higher, or as in several Middle East regions, to challenge others in manipulating the... more

Hindus have strongly criticized attempts to regulate yoga by various states in USA. Acclaimed Hindu statesman Rajan Zed, in a statement in Nevada (USA) today, said that yoga was one of the six systems of orthodox Hindu philosophy whose traces went back to around 2000 BCE. Yoga never had any formal organization and yoga practice had been handed down from one guru to the next. US Audacity of Hope Falters: Settlement Freeze No Longer Required

09/04/2009 6:40 PM
The US has decided to be 'flexible' regarding its once touted call for a total Israeli freeze on the expansion of its occupied territories' settlements, all illegal under international law. A senior official spoke to reporters on condition of anonymity on August 27. "It was more important that the scope of a settlement freeze was acceptable to the Israelis and the Palestinians than to the United States," Reuters reported, citing the senior official. This means that peace negotiations can resume while Israeli bulldozers are carving up Palestinian land, demolishing homes and cutting down trees. It also means that the Israeli rejection of the only US demand, which has thus far defined President Barack Obama's relations to the ... more

Fighting for the Right to Walk

09/04/2009 6:40 PM
Gaza's troubles have somehow been relegated, if not completely dropped from the mainstream media's radar, and subsequently the world's conscience and consciousness. Weaning the public from the sadness there conveys the false impression that things are improving and that people are starting to move on and rebuild their lives. But nothing could be further from the truth. Since the conclusion of Israel's war last year, the Palestinian Ministry of Health declared that 344 Gaza patients have reportedly been added to the swelling number of casualties. Khaled Abed Rabbu, once a young father of four is a precise living example, such an eloquent paradigm of what no human being ought to endure in this world laden with international h... more

08/19/2009 11:03 AM
...Where is President Mills in all these? Why has he maintained his silence despite the call for him to step in? Obama decided to choose Ghana out of about 48 countries in Africa South of the Sahara for his maiden visit because of what he calls Ghana's strong democratic credentials, human rights record, rule of law, freedom of speech and assembly and economic performance. But barely one month after his visit he must be shaking his head for praising the country and authoring those praising words. He now wished he had not visited the country at all. He has now realised that Ghana too is an African country where nothing good could come from. The question he is asking is, "Is this the country that I visited just one month ago? I thought t... more
