WNBA: Sky Flying, But Rocky Finish In Season Opener

Jarrod Rogol
With the NBA season playoffs in a winding down stage, the action of the WNBA has just launched, as tonight was the opening of the regular season.

During the pre season, the Chicago Sky outlasted the forces of the Seattle Storm and Los Angeles Sparks. Now, as the regular season has launched, the Sky once again proved that they are a team who can run the court and pressure their opponent defeating the Sting 83-82. The Charlotte fans saw a team in Chicago that no one will be able to say doesn?t have the speed and the open court ability, as the Sky had 23 fast break points while holding the Sting to only seven.

Candice Dupree the rookie from Temple led the Sky with 29:00 minutes on the hardwood, while picking up a team leading 19 points.

Chicago did show a little bit of the ?expansion,? side as they gave up a 16-point lead in the fourth quarter. The Sky also had 21 turnovers, these are things though, that they will be able to work on and build off of. With the amount of veteran leadership the team has, this won?t be the case for long and should fix its self rather quickly.

The top performers for the Sting included Forward Sheri Sam who had 17 points, 6 boards, and 3 steals. While LaToya Bond, Tangela Smith, and Kelly Mazzante also finished in double digits with 15, 14, and 10 points respectively.

Overall, both teams showed areas of strengths and areas that will need to be the focus of practices. One item that the Sky will have to work on is getting boards, as they lost the battle of the glass 23-36. With the Sting, the focus will need to be working on running the court stronger.

Side Note

Next Sky game: May 23, 2006 on Tuesday at home against Yolanda Griffith?s Sacramento Monarchs, who defeated the Phoenix Mercury 105-78 tonight. Tuesday?s game is set to get underway at 7:00 p.m. (CST).
