WILL MEGHAN McCAIN BECOME THE NEW "POSTER WOMAN" FOR THE NEXT GENERATION GOP?

Gary Ater
...Ms. Meghan McCain

"Meghan McCain could become the next "Maverick McCain".

Now Ms. Meghan McCain is anything but a young Britney Spears type "air head" celebrity. She is a 24 year old, 2007 graduate of Columbia University. She has already written regularly for Newsweek Magazine and has been an active political blogger since her father, Senator John McCain, began running for his party´s 2008 nomination.

She admits that she has only been a "real Republican for less than a year," and she is anything but a die-hard GOP conservative. She is a "moderate" that currently supports gay marriage, stem-cell research and in 2004, she voted for the Democrat, John Kerry.

What recently sent her to the forefront was her blog statements about the current pre-eminent spokeswoman "Diva" for the ultra conservative side of the GOP, Miz. Ann Coulter, and then later, her comments on the conservative talk-show host, Laura Ingraham. Her Blog comments on Tina Brown´s, "Daily Beast", really started some major interest that instantly got her an invitation to the day-time women´s TV talk show, "The View".

In her blog comments about Miz. Coulter, she said; "…certain individuals continue to perpetuate negative stereotypes about Republicans. Especially Republican women. Who do I feel is the biggest culprit? Ann Coulter. I straight up don´t understand this woman or her popularity. I find her offensive, radical, insulting, and confusing all at the same time."

She later said; "Coulter could be the poster woman for the most extreme side of the Republican Party. And in some ways I could be the poster woman for the opposite. I consider myself a progressive Republican, but here is what I don´t get about Coulter: Is she for real or not? Are some of her statements just gimmicks to gain publicity for her books or does she actually believe the things she says?"

She later went after Laura Ingraham after Ingraham parodied Ms. McCain on her radio show in a "Valley-girl" voice saying: "Okay, I was really hoping that I was going to get that role in 'The Real World,' but then I realized that, well, they don't like plus-sized models." McCain then went after Ingraham saying; "Quit talking about my weight, Laura Ingraham…! "

While on "The View", McCain was encouraging women to stop worrying so much about their bodies. While on the show she also suggested that Laura Ingraham "kiss my fat [expletive]."

The reality of Ms. McCain is that she could be the best thing to happen to the Republicans in years.

She is a part of the next generation that for the most part, those of her age or younger were targeted by the Obama campaign and his team was very successful with that voter demographic. Even Ms. McCain suggests that the Republicans are very fortunate to have "any new members from her generation". McCain´s ideology is 180 degrees from Ann Coulter´s and the conservative Republican base. And her demeanor is totally positive when compared to Coulter´s attitude of hate and negativity.

McCain understands that those on the extreme ends of both the conservative and the liberal perspectives would find her a "walking contradiction". But with the older conservatives dying off, most of the GOP´s future young members will probably be closer to Meghan McCain´s philosophy than to that of either Ann Coulter or Laura Ingraham.

As Ms. McCain was saying about her finally becoming a Republican, "I assure you, there are many people out there just like me who represent a new, younger generation of Republicans. It took me almost two years of campaigning across this country and hanging out, on a daily basis, with some of the most famous and most intelligent Republicans to fall in love with the Republican Party. If it took that much time and exposure for me [being John McCain´s daughter !] to join the party, how can GOP leaders possibly expect to reach young supporters by "staying the course" they have been on these past eight years? Where has our extreme thinking gotten us? President Bush will go down as one the least popular presidents in history."

Talking like this will do good things for the GOP, especially for those young individuals that will be deciding as to which party they want to join when their time comes. Democrats need to beware of this young Republican as she has already been able to develop a significant following. She could easily make Governor Sarah Palin look even more like the "buffoon" she is and Meghan McCain could become the next real "McCain Maverick".

Meghan McCain is very smart, she´s attractive and communicates well, and she already has name recognition. The Democrats need to beware if she eventually decides to get into politics. And even if she doesn´t, she could still become a very effective recruitment tool for the "New Republican Party".

The Democrats had better keep a close eye on Ms. McCain or over time, they could have to deal with another GOP "McCain" in the future.
