A Small Measure Of Gesture For The Murder Of Sean Bell

"Were just looking for a small measure of gesture" are the words echoed from Ms. Shawn Williams, an activist for crime victims, as she prepares to attend the hearing on March 18, 2009; When the Bell Family goes before Community Board Twelve (Jamaica Queens, New York), in the efforts of having their son´s named added to the street where he was killed.

In the early morning hours of November 25, 2006 Sean Bell was shot dead in a hail of fifty shots fired by New York City Police Officers. Ironically, Bell was to be married later that day. The Sean Bell case has ignited outrage in New York and cities around the world, shattering the respected tolerance many exemplified for the Police, in spite of the brutality suffered by many communities. New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg and New York State Governor George Pataki had quickly issued public statements of evident "excessive force", Nonetheless, the three officers indicted in the shooting, Micheal Oliver, Gescard Isnora, and Marc Cooper were acquitted on all charges.

Two years later, The Family of Sean Bell, in their pursuit for justice has


escalated their case to the Federal level. As they await their day in court, they turn once again to their community leaders and neighbors for support. On a Queens Public Access TV show "Kicking it With Rosie", which aired on Sunday Night at 11:30pm channel 34, Valerie Bell, the mother of Sean Bell ,spoke on the family´s decision in choosing the location for the street.The street where Sean Bell died has become a tourist attraction. Many people visiting the city, have requested to view the sight which has made American history.

Victory is the projected out come for Wednesday night´s meeting where Mr. and Mrs. Bell will be present, along side of Nicole Paultre´-Bell and Al Sharpton, who will be the keynote speaker. The public meeting will be held at: The Robert Ross Johnson Family Life Center : 172-17 Linden Boulevard, St. Albans N.Y. 11434 at 7:00 PM.
