GDP Needs Healthy Choices
How many in Congress want to update their thinking about what has escalated our lives out of control and into this economic chaos? Do they access the most gifted and clever minds in the world that are working at our universities and colleges when issues of the day need interpretation and clarification. These scholars and professors have the most up to date, innovative and technological resources for the new objectives our country needs to achieve. Google and PayPal are examples of college students living on the edge of new technology.
Do you think it´s in our country´s best interest to have lobbyist and special interests roaming the halls of Congress supplying bias information to our lawmakers? We´re seeing the harsh realities caused by generations that didn´t listen to the vision of their contemporaries. Those who shut out our greatest human resources of knowledge and intuition that education can stimulate. Where were the advancements in pollution control, renewable energies, healthy prevention and sustainable jobs, ten, twenty, thirty years ago?
When you experience business leaders and government officials lacking values, morals, ethics and integrity with past examples of Enron, Tyco, WorldCom and Adelphia. We continue to add to that list the Wall Street bailout, the financial community meltdown, AIG and the American automakers, on the verge of bankruptcy. What do all of these have in common? The tool of greed that committed fraud was dishonesty.
Where are the opportunities today? Education budgets have been an extremely small percentage of the GDP. Most schools lack the proper funds to supply the best education and classrooms are over-crowded. Students don´t receive the attention needed to train their minds to think clearly and respond objectively. Without comprehensive decision making, becoming an effective adult is strained.
Marriages fail at a 50% rate. 25% of high school students in California drop out. Eating disorders are common and approximately one third of American adults are obese and childhood obesity is at an all time high. 70 million people don´t sleep soundly at night. Alcohol and drug addiction touches every family and cancer is an epidemic. What are we doing? When transparency is blocked and honesty is omitted, our conscious effort to do the right thing gets confused.
How many parents without partners are raising children with no one to help them maintain the responsibilities that it takes to teach a child the difference between right and wrong? Who is taking the time to develop a child´s interests with checks and balances that inspire honesty? How many adults show by example what they expect, so there´s no contradictions with, "Do as I say, not as I do?"
There´s an enormous advantage when people are thinking and doing the right thing, the first time without double standards and lies diluting the confidence and trust in each other. Too many contradictions alienate our common sense as we lose perspective and respect for each other. The blindness that develops in individuals when your genuine and authentic responses are neglected for power and greed, reduces the objectivity for what´s legitimate and healthy.
AND NOW IT´S TIME TO CHANGE
If you´re sitting on a board of directors, managing people or a representative in our country, the decisions being made right now, determines where our society is headed. Our families should come first, as the priority and the motivation for making these decisions.
Truth needs to be the common reality, not the exception. We know that transparency provides the true indicator that facilitates us moving forward with solutions that will benefit the health and well-being of our citizens. Are you listening to your associates and family members as you talk with them about what´s on their mind? These minds are the future and what we communicate with each other is our reality. Do you want the smoke and mirrors of the "old school" generation to continue?
Digital technologies have leveled the playing field with effective communication resources and the ability to accomplish with lighting speed, what use to take hours, days, months and years. As we challenge our businesses to become sustainable and we develop new ways to grow less dependent on fossil fuels and fossil ways, we need to make quality education our main focus. Accelerating the best innovations and showing appreciation for what each American is doing, helps us to accomplish our new goals.
As you actively listen and hear, walk in their shoes to understand why they think like they do. We need to work together and acknowledge what´s good about a proposal, bill or idea and then show by example what we think needs changing with facts to support it, without bashing or arrogant rhetoric.
Working together as Americans, we can regain our pride in this country and develop the trust we need for a strong foundation that´s solid with integrity. By making the healthy choices that are sustainable as a collective objective, our nation begins to reevaluate and rebuild our values, beliefs, attitudes and behaviors that will make us stronger in the 21st century.
