Confidence and Speaking In Public

Jennie Gandhi
Confidence is gained by continuously getting exposed to a large audience. Great performers too face a nervous tension but they sincerely deliver the goods with conviction. The best way to gain confidence is to practice speaking in front of the mirror or speak aloud to an imaginary audience. Mugging up a speech is like delivering emotions artificially. It can happen that you may forget a passage or again lose the right pronunciation. Great speakers are extempore and write their own speeches.

During a presentation to the management, the project feasibility lies on the art of articulation as rendered by the personnel. The primary criteria is focus and not to lose the same. Usually presentations are on the power point or put up on the projector. Here it is important to adhere to minimum speech and garner attention to various dramatic or graphical presentations. The choice of words must also be highlighted through a flowchart or bullet form. In case it is attended by minimum audience then it is important to use a low pitch or adjust the mike accordingly.

Speaking clearly is also important. There are different styles of rendering or speaking but many times expressions do most of the talking. It is also important to break the monotone in the voice with an interesting narration or an anecdote in case the premise allows the same. Thank you speeches are generally clichéd but the speaker can relate a few natural experiences and also bring about humor to retain the interest of the audience.

The speaker naturally experiences a certain confidence especially when he or she knows that the audience is initially impressed. It is important here to maintain the tempo in the future paragraphs and this can be done by keeping the interest alive. Noted orators and people holding pivotal roles in politics usually speak about what interests the public rather than about themselves.

In case you falter or mispronounce a word there is no need to feel embarrassment. This can be pulled off easily by continuing with more confidence or a forceful body language. Eye contact and reaching out to people in the last row is important. Public speaking improves with exposure and one learns each time while delivering on the podium.
