Americans Should Respect The 'National Day Without Immigrants'

Robert Paul Reyes
"May 1st, International Workers' Day, commemorates the historic struggle of working people throughout the world, and is recognized in every country except the United States, Canada, and South Africa. This despite the fact that the holiday began in the 1880's in the United States, with the fight for an eight-hour work day."

May Day is usually ignored in the United States, but this year will be different, Monday 1, 2006 will bring attention to millions of hard workers who are invisible, exploited and taken for granted.

This Monday your favorite waiter at your favorite restaurant may be missing, your nanny may call in sick, your gardener may not be available... Folks absent on May 1 will be joining in the National Day without Immigrants.

Notice, it's not the National Day without Illegal Aliens. There is nothing illegal, unethical or immoral about seeking to make a better life for your family. It's racist, immoral and unethical to label a human being "illegal."

The undocumented workers in this country are not aliens, most of them are simply returning to territory that was stolen from Mexico by the United States. An undocumented worker residing in Texas, California or New Mexico does not have an alien appearance, he's right at home in these areas of the country that have a large Hispanic population.

Is this day necessary, or is it just an attempt by activists to stir up trouble? You be the judge, last year the House of Representatives pased HR4437 which makes all undocumented immigrants felons.

The National Day without Immigrants is a peaceful way of protesting a racist an immoral attempt to criminalize immigrants.

Hispanics are usually portrayed in the media as violent and reckless, but in recent months millions of Latinos have peacefully demonstrated for human rights all over America.

Americans have nothing to fear from this day of peaceful protest, I hope this action will make all Americans realize that immigrants are a vital and necessary segment of our population. Without them our economy would fall apart, and our freedom and liberty would be compromised.
