Challenges and Opportunities for NANC Executives

Dhruva Thapa
Since past five years, I have been writing news and views of the community events of Northern California. I have been able to cover news from various aspects and wrote featured articles for different organization that is growing rapidly in this area. In every articles and news I have always highlighted Nepal Association of Northern California (NANC) as an umbrella and the leading and most significant organizations for the Nepalese and the friends of Nepal.

Letīs get back to the history of the organization which was established in July 30, 1994. It was formed by a small integer of Nepalese folks of that time. When the organization was registered there were very few Nepalese in the region and it had become a center of charisma to celebrate different activities including major festivals of Nepal, impart and show their existence in this area. According to its official website, the very first program organized by the association was the greatest festival of Nepal, Dashain in Emeryville. On the same occasion, the nine executive committee including President and Vice President were elected by voting system.

According to the NANCīs mission statement itīs main objective is to promote and preserve Nepalese identity, culture, Languages among the Nepalese and friends of Nepal and those who are interested in Nepal. It also encourages keeping up goodwill, mutual understanding among the Nepalese community living in Northern California. It also provides a development forum for Nepali Diasporas and friends of Nepal in the United States.

NANCīs principal activities includes –Celebrate Nepali Cultural activities, foster Nepali Language, art and culture, and provide support and raise fund for charitable cause in the US and in Nepal.

Letīs come back to the present, on December 13, 2008 NANC hold its election for the post of President, General Secretary and Cashier and successfully conducted the election declaring Yan Rai as its President and Santos Lama as General Secretary. On that historic election 403 vote counted and it was certainly a great accomplishment. Thereafter the ex- committee organized a special handover program to new Ex-com on 11 Jan 2009 at Humanist Hall, Oakland. On the occasion the New Executive committee took the charge of NANC. Now all the Nepalese communities living in this area are looking them for some changes and productive work from them. But on that event less than hundred community members turned up. It was not a good symptom for the newly elected executives but more challenging task for them to perform. So they have to focus attracting more and more associates to come forward and unite. Most of the elected Executives have presented their future program and scheme if at least few of them implemented in their two years tenure the Nepalese community would be highly benefitted.

According to two events (election and Welcome party) which took place within a month illustrate both satisfaction and dissatisfaction among the community members. As of now, by analyzing both the circumstances they have to face many Challenges and even good Opportunities to demonstrate their capability.

Challenges:

1. Implementation of their word into action.

2. Amendment of NANC bylaws.

3. To unite all the Nepalese community of the region and bring them in one platform.

4. To attract all the Local organizations to feel that NANC is their

5. Giving equal emphasis and priority to all the ethnic groups of the region.

6. Drive maximum volunteers from NANC for forthcoming ANA convention and make it a grand success.

7. Representing all the community activities organized by various organizations including showing our presence in the main stream American Society and friends of Nepal.

Opportunities

1. First of all making their declaration a reality.

2. Establishing Physical office of NANC or meeting center for any community activities.

3. Working for students, new comersī including Bhutanese community.

4. Opening and running Language, Literary, dance, painting and cultural activities for the growing kids of Nepalese community.

5. Organizing Nepal Saanjh as foundation day of NANC or "Unity within Diversity day" and also establishing awards for various positions for community work and honoring students of our community in their achievement.

6. Fund raising for ongoing project of Community Center initiated by Himalayan Community center.

7. Organizing Medical camp, health screening, job orientation, business opportunities and many more in this down economy.

I am writing this article hoping to get some attention by the NANC Executives and implementing them if they assume these are helpful to our society. We all know that we have lots of expectation from newly and historically elected executives, otherwise there would not be such a great turn over during election. We have heard a lot from their election campaign and expecting at least few of them to be implemented if not all. I am pretty optimistic and hoping to get somewhat productive and effective work out from the newly elected bodies, wish you all the best and good luck.
