Caroline Kennedy would make a great Senator from New York
She would be a fresh start as she is coming to run for a public position for the first time. But she is no stranger to political issues and public policies. Her experience of public education and her experience `as an accomplished author on constitutional law, the bill of rights, and political courage` will come handy when she would push for issues that people of New York care.
For all those who worry too much about her last name, think it this way. She has a last name with long legacy to protect. So I can put my trust on her.
She doesn't need any introduction. We all know her, and so are all in the Senate. She can start power play for New York from day one in Washington.
For all the Democrats, they need her for this seat because they need to defend this seat twice in next four years (2010 and 2012). Who else can make that happen? If her last name comes as handy on fundraising and building political coalition, so be it. What is the herm?
Republicans are already lining up for 2010. Top republican strategists believe this seat could be in play for 2010. They signaled to put resources here for a major showdown. So the most important question is not in the 28-Page Questionnaire that Governor Paterson sent to the contenders for Hillary Clinton's Senate seat. Most important question is to ask who can win it in 2010 and 2012. A fellow Democratic hopeful has said "It's not easy competing with a Kennedy". Imagine what republican contenders would say?
Another aspect of this is to think about 2016. With 8 years in the Senate, she would make a perfect front runner for 2016 President. I am thrilled already!
Eight years ago another highly intelligent female lawyer with heavy last name wanted to be the junior Senator of New York. We heard similar attack on her as well. That did not stop her though. She crossed that hurdle with courage and intelligence. We all know very well what followed after that. She not only made a great Senator from New York, 8 years later, she almost got the president nomination and win 18 millions `crack in the glass ceilings`. History is about to repeat itself.
I know that other contenders who eye on 2016 may try to sabotage her now. Knowing how formidable a candidate she will be in 2010, republican bloggers and commentators have joined in the party. But it won't work. She will pull it off and make a great Senator. I am looking forward to see her shine.
