The key to understanding the war in Gaza

Karl Trautwein
Once again war has broken out between Arabs and Jews in the Middle East. For most of us this endless fighting seems incomprehensible and senseless. There are, however, under-reported reasons for this conflict. Once these underlying causes are understood this senseless fighting begins to make sense.

In the current war, Israelīs defense forces find themselves fighting Hamas in Gaza. Over the last seven years Hamas has fired over 3,000 rockets and conducted 2,500 mortar attacks from Gaza into Israel. Hamas has recently launched new missile attacks after a bilateral six-month cease fire. Israelīs Welfare Minister Issac Herzog has stated that the goal of Israelīs military action is to prevent future rocket launchings.

Hamas is an Islamic movement that operates according to an organizational charter that spells out its objectives clearly in thirty-six articles. The Hamas charter is constructed upon ideas and quotations from Islamic scripture and is fundamentally Islamic in nature. Article one states that Hamas seeks to advance Islam and draws its ideas and guidance for its actions from Islam. Article five states that Hamas has adopted Islam as a way of life and that the Prophet Muhammad is their example and the Koran their constitution.

Hamas believes that all of Palestine is, by the decree of Allah, set aside for Muslims until the final judgement day. This means that the law governing Palestine should be Islamic Sharia law. Sharia law takes the religious rules of Islam and writes them into the law of the land. In effect this accomplishes a complete merging of church and state. Everyone living under Islamic Sharia law must conform to the religious rules of the Koran – even those who are not Muslim.

Since the Israeli state governs lands that Hamas believes are divinely set aside for Muslim rule, Hamas believes that the Israeli state has no right to exist and must be destroyed. After Israel is defeated Hamas plans install an Islamic state in its place. In article thirteen Hamas states:

"There is no solution for the Palestinian question except through Jihad. Initiatives, proposals and international conferences are all a waste of time and vain endeavors."

Jihad, according to the Koran, is a war to forcibly bring about the rule of Islam. Islamic scripture contains calls to Muslims to fight and kill to advance Islam. The prophet Muhammad personally went to Jewish synagogues and demanded that the Jews convert to Islam. If they did not he waged war on them. Here is what Muhammad said:

"I am commanded to fight with men till they testify that there is no god but Allah, and that Muhammad is His servant and His Apostle…"

Because of the use of tactics that include intentional killing of civilians through missile attacks and suicide bombings, Hamas is considered to be a terrorist organization. The Muslim population of Palestine elected Hamas to nearly sixty-percent of the seats in their parliament. These elections were deemed free and fair so it can be rightly assumed that the views of Hamas are shared by a large percentage of the areas Muslim population.

The conflict with Hamas and other Islamic terrorist organizations is fundamentally religious in nature. Since 9/11 there have been over 11,000 terrorist attacks perpetrated by Muslims. These attacks draw their inspiration from the same Islamic scriptures as Hamas. Analysts and pundits may assert that the causes of Islamic terrorism are economic or political. Analysis of the Koran and Hadith (the words and actions of Muhammad) shows otherwise.

I call the portions of the Koran and Hadith that call for violence and hate "the 9/11 verses" because they are the true inspiration for acts of terror conducted by the 9/11 hijackers, Hamas, and all other Muslim terrorists. These scripture verses help fuel terrorism by causing the Muslim believer to hate non-Muslims and feel they are doing the work of God by killing them. Those covering the Middle East conflicts have not widely reported on what these "9/11 verses" actually teach. Yet they are the key to understanding the war in Gaza.

Karl J. Trautwein is the author of the new book "The 9/11 Verses – Terrorist Teachings In the Koran" which details the Islamic scriptures that inspire terrorism. (www.the911verses.com)
