The Vatican Relaxing Ban On Condoms?
This sounds promising, if the Catholic Church gives its blessings to the use of condoms as a means of combating the spread of AIDS, it would be performing a great public service.
But alas the Pope hasn't had an epiphany, he is still stuck in the Dark Ages. The AP article quotes a Vatican official: " we are conducting a very profound, scientific, technical and moral study on how to deal with married couples when one is infected with HIV."
The Vatican has no intention of lifting their ban on the general use of prophylactics; they are considering allowing their use only for married couples when one is infected with HIV.
What does the Catholic Church expect a married couple to do when one of them is infected with HIV? Have the non-infected spouse choose between celibacy and risky sex?
The mission of any religion should be to alleviate human suffering. By prohibiting their followers from using rubbers the Catholic Church is damning untold thousands to the ravages of AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases.
I find it astounding and utterly perplexing that rational human beings still look to religion for guidance in scientific and medical matters. If you want to know how many angels can dance on the head of a pin, by all means consult the Vatican, but if you are curious how to prevent the spread of HIV, contact the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
