Communicating with Our Senators and Representatives

Dennis AuBuchon
Communicating with Senators and Representatives at the state and federal levels is something that all Americans should take the time to accomplish. With the current, state of the economy the legislatures at both the state and federal level needs each citizenīs input on the issues. Both the state and federal government will have to make hard decisions and it is important for us as voters to give our input to our senators and representatives.

The present downturn cycle in our economy will mean less tax revenue at the state and federal level. This aspect is a result of individuals who have lost their jobs. Things will probably get worse before they get better and they will get better. When individuals lose their jobs, they are not paying taxes that flow into the state and federal treasuries. When this occurs, it also creates the need for states to pay out more from unemployment funds. This article is about communicating with our state and federal senators and representatives and why it is important.

The news media seems to focus on national issues at the federal government level but state issues are also important for state economies. There are many laws enacted each year at the state and federal level and I feel too often that our senators and representatives do not receive enough input from us their constituents. These government officials work for us and they should be interested in our opinion and views on various issues, which are being processed at the applicable legislature.

Today there also seems to be an increase in the lack of integrity in government officials. This is not limited to national levels but also flows from state and local governments. The recent issue with the Governor of Illinois points to this aspect. Those elected to serve us at any level of government must have the highest level of integrity principles engrained in their character. One way of communicating how we feel about these characteristics is to communicate with our respective senators and representatives. As I have stated before there are many laws enacted each year at the state and federal government levels and many of them we know little about unless they get media exposure. Our state and federal governments are there to serve us and we must let them know what we want and how we feel about issues before each legislature. While this normally would be difficult to know about issues, it is now easier to accomplish.

There is a site, which provides details of who our respective senators and representatives are at the state and federal levels. To aid in the process of communicating with senators and representative I have provided links to each state for both the state and federal senators and representatives on my site myqualitywriting.com. The main site location is congress.org. This site is amazing and if you cannot find the information you want there you will not find it. This site not only offers links to state and federal officials it also offers links to issues and actions, legislation, comments from constituents and much more. They also have a free newsletter, which can provide valuable information on issues of the day.

The last point to make is about the importance of integrity principles in society and our government officials. Government officials are there to serve us and make the right decisions that are best for the country or state as applicable. The more we communicate our desires to our senators and representatives the more they will know we are watching what they do and that we are interested in the issues. There has been too much partisan politics and the job is not getting done in many cases. Communicating with our government officials and keeping up on the current issues and legislation before the applicable legislature is important. It will not only help us to be better informed but will provide a voice to our elected officials. It will provide notice that we know about the issues and have an opinion for which they must consider when making a decision to accept or reject the legislation before them.

I am the author of a book titled Integrity: Do You Have It? 2nd edition. It defines integrity and discusses the characteristics. It creates a common set of criteria to measure others and us for the existence of integrity. These criteria are then applied to various segments of society such as the news, education and politics. It also brings the subject of integrity down to the individual level through a chapter on personal integrity.

My second book is titled What Makes a Good Audit? It discusses the process of auditing from the perspective of the auditor and those being audited. It covers not only the requirements for the commercial side of auditing but also the governemt. There are benefits in being audited or doing audits and these are covered in specific chapters in the book.

I have been writing for a few years and have concentrated my articles around the topic of integrity.
