Most Popular Telemarketing Schemes

Your phone is a tool that can be used for you or against you. In some cases, phone calls get turned from being normal calls into being scams that are used to defraud you of money. The telemarketers who do these scams are trying to get tons of money from you and can do so easily if you get too flustered or don´t know what to watch out for.

There are a number of popular telemarketing scams. The first one is the prize scam. You get a phone call from someone who is telling you that you´ve won a great prize – one that you never signed up for. The telemarketer then gets your information down and you discover later that your checking account is minus quite a bit of money. If you haven´t signed up for a prize anywhere, hang the phone up immediately.

Lots of telemarketers call trying to get you to buy a magazine subscription. The scam? These telemarketers often add money onto the total in order to get something for themselves. What seems to be only a few dollars quickly adds up when you start multiplying it by the thousands of people who get scammed by these telemarketers.

Another popular telemarketing scam is called slamming. This is when you receive a phone call from someone who claims to be able to give you a better deal on your phone service. When you switch, however, you aren´t actually being switched to the phone service you wanted but rather to another phone service that you never signed up for. It can cost hundreds of dollars to get yourself out of this type of a position. Telephone scammers are why it´s a good idea to know who is on the other end of the phone every time you pick it up.
