Human Smuggler, 100 mph Interstate Pursuit
Phoenix, AZ - 4/19/06. On Wednesday afternoon, traveling up to 100 miles per hour, the driver of a truck filled with human cargo tried to flee Sheriff's deputies by crossing the median on I-8 near Gila Bend and heading into oncoming traffic.
Avoiding a collision, the truck veered off the roadway and the smuggler and 17 illegal immigrants from Mexico tried to run away from deputies but were caught.
The arrests follow a separate incident Tuesday involving several illegal immigrants stopped by a Sheriff's Smuggling Unit in the desert off Interstate 8 and later booked into jail, under the new state co-conspiracy anti-smuggling law.
"The situation today was extremely dangerous and underscores the desperation these illegal immigrants feel right now to get into this country hoping for amnesty, if the proposal by some Washington politicians goes through," says Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio.
Arpaio has promised to crack down on illegal immigration in Maricopa County by forming an anti-smuggling unit which has already concluded four separate investigations with the arrest of about 70 illegal immigrants in the last six weeks.
Arpaio's Office is the only law enforcement agency in Arizona enforcing the new state law which allows the arrests of illegal immigrants who conspire with smugglers to travel into Arizona.
"I'm not going to surrender to the controversy surrounding this issue," says Arpaio. "We will continue to arrest and jail illegal immigrants. I already have 2000 men and women in tents and if I have to build more to house illegal immigrants.

Opinion: Travel Status with Convoys of Smugglers I-44 to the Heartland shows a situation that is a constant criminal violation of law in every state of the union, not just Arizona. Highway accidents, deaths, serious injuries to frequent “gunfire exchanges” between rival smuggling factions is a never ending crisis on Interstate systems.
The United States Government once had a National Anti-Smuggling Program, NASP that was very effective in controlling organized criminal organizations, human trafficking cadres coast to coast. U.S. Border Patrol “plain clothes” criminal investigators to INS Special Agents, Anti-Smuggling Units formed Task Forces to arrest, prosecute and dismantle organized criminals using the Interstate Smuggling Corridors. Police Agencies also assisted in the mission prior to an age of political correctness.
Phoenix, Arizona is a sanctuary city similar to Los Angeles for illegal aliens per municipal police regulations. The majority of large scale Category 1 Alien Smuggling Cases, Felony Organizations used Phoenix as a staging area. Drop houses, airline and Interstate distribution points nationwide were part of multi-million dollar operations in human flesh conspiracies.
Arizona’s new Anti-Smuggling Law passed by some very intelligent elected Representatives has already proven to be effective in Phoenix.
Perhaps it’s time for Immigration and Customs Enforcement to form a special unit Task Force whose sole duties are Anti-Smuggling missions and response to Police Agencies along theInterstate nationwide.
Human Trafficking is still a class 1 felony in the United States and a Federal problem.
The new and improved Department of Homeland Security could utilize the format of the original NASP mission and regain again the confidence of State and county police.
