Creative Ways to Save Money

Bernard B.
Are you a saver? If you are, I know you're proud of it. We sure are. Nowadays, people are struggling to find ways to save money.

I'm sure we are all aware of the conventional ways such as cutting back on going to the movies, using less water and gas, shopping at the dollar store, clipping coupons, bringing your lunch to work, etc. Those are easy...and not really fun.

Are you looking for creative ways to save money? Let me give you five creative strategies that we have learned:

  • Category: Insurance

Strategy: Call your insurance broker once a year.

Savings: Ask them if they can find cheaper rates. Rates fluctuate all the time. So, it is in your best interest to take advantage of cheaper rates.

This is the beauty of having a broker. They will look for the rates for you. Not only does this save you money, but it saves you time.

  • Category: Food and Entertainment

Strategy: Soft drink substitution with kids.

Savings: My niece and nephew are at the age where they like to drink soft drinks. As you know, drinking a lot of soft drinks is unhealthy and can put a dent into your grocery and dinner bills. So, whenever you go out to eat with your kids, give them an option: get a soft drink or $1.

More often than not, your kids will take the $1 and order water instead. Not only are they drinking healthier drinks, they're learning how to save and prioritize what they want. The big bonus for you is that most places charge more than $1 for a soft drink. So this is saving you money too!

  • Category: Food and Entertainment

    Strategy: When to buy organic.

Savings: Eating healthy is an essential part of living in our household. We like to buy organic. As you may know organic typically means more expensive.

However, I read a study that you may not need to buy all organic items. If produce has nonporous skin, then consider buying regular than organic. Apples have a hard enough skin to where chemicals are less likely to penetrate it. Consider buying regular. Oranges, on the other hand, have a porous skin. Consider buying organic.

  • Category: Cars

Strategy: When to buy a car.

Savings: Typically, the best time to buy a car is late at night and at the end of the month or the year.

At night, the sales team just wants to go home. So, a lot tend to negotiate less and give you more of what you want.

At the end of the month, a sales person's goal is to reach his/her quota. They tend to negotiate less because they want the sale to meet their goals.

At the end of the year, new models are already out. Dealerships want to get rid of their old inventory. This is a good time to take advantage of end of the year deals.

  • Category: Gift Cards

Strategy: Buying gift cards from a grocery store using your cash rewards credit card.

Savings: A lot of major grocery store chains are offering a slew of gift cards. They range from Starbucks, to Best Buy, to iTunes.

Let's say you have a cash rewards credit card that gives you 5% back when shopping at grocery stores. Instead of going to Best Buy and buying a $200 item, try this:

Next time you're at the grocery store, buy a $200 Best Buy gift card with your cash rewards credit card.

Go to Best Buy and use that gift card in order to buy your item.

    Save $10.

I think everyone is aware of typical frugal ways to save money. So, strive to think of creative ways to make your money more efficient.

Work to save not only money, but effort and time. Traveling all over town for the best deal on gas isn't practical...neither is spending all Sunday cutting coupons.

So, enjoy life...and keep saving!
