Survey Shows Division on Military Draft
Headline Press regularly conducts opinion polls on news related issues to determine public opinion on issues of the day, and provides breaking news from a large variety of news organizations, which includes streaming TV news reports from around the World.
Some 55% of those surveyed said they do not favor the reinstatement of the U.S. military draft, while 45% said the draft should be reinstated. Critics charge that the military is unable to handle the ongoing conflicts in Iraqi and Afghanistan without repeatedly calling up troops from the military reserves. Some reservists have served three tours in Iraqi taking them away from their families and jobs.
A series of lawsuits have been leveled against the U.S. government regarding employees being taken away from their work places for extended periods of time by employers. The issue has led to the layoffs and firings of reservists, who have found that they do not have a job to return to when they return from active duty.
The problem has led to lawsuits against the government and employers, some of whom have refused to reinstate employees after returning from war. The call to reinstate the military draft has been attempted before after it was halted in 1973 by Congress at the conclusion of the Vietnam War.
Critics also charge that poor and the under-educated are victims of there not being a draft since many underprivileged are more likely to volunteer for military service. Studies indicate those who serve in the military on a volunteer basis are prone to have lower IQ´s. The controversy still goes on more than 35 years after the draft was abolished.
