Lap ban surgery: Are you eligible?

An effective solution for weight loss is lap ban surgery.Nowadays it is like a trend that I am overweight/obese then I should go for lap band surgery. But the problem is here, this solution is really for not all obese people. Looking as surgery side-effects and complications your body should be in such condition that an individual can bear it. The lap-band surgery is not right for you if:



  • You are suffering from an inflammatory disease or condition of the gastrointestinal tract, such as Crohn's disease, ulcers or severe esophagitis.


  • You are suffering from severe heart or lung disease.


  • You have a problem that could cause bleeding in the esophagus or stomach. That might include esophageal or gastric varices (a dilated vein). It might also be something such as congenital or acquired intestinal telangiectasia (dilation of a small blood vessel).


  • You have high blood pressure in the portal vein and its branches.


  • Your stomach or intestine, esophagus is not normal (congenital or acquired). For instance you might have a narrowed opening.


  • You have or have experienced an intra-operative gastric injury, such as a gastric tear at or near the location of the planned band placement.


  • You are suffering from cirrhosis.


  • You have chronic pancreatitis.


  • You are pregnant. If you have given birth of a baby then after one year only. (During the period of lap ban if you become pregnant then you can adjust your lap band for providing more nutrition to your baby).

    You are addicted to alcohol or drugs.


  • Your age is less than 18 years or older than 65.


  • You have an infection anywhere in your body or one that could infect the surgical area.


  • You are on constant, long-term steroid treatment.


  • You are not mentally prepared to follow the dietary rules that come with this procedure.


  • You might be allergic to materials in the device.


  • You afraid for surgery.


  • You or someone in your family has an autoimmune connective tissue disease. That might be a disease such as systemic lupus erythematosus or scleroderma. The same is true if you have symptoms of one of these diseases.


  • If your expectations are more than imagination.



  • Your surgeon will not do the operation unless he or she knows you understand the problems your excess weight is causing. Also, you should make clear that you will change your lifestyle too to achieve that goal.



    The lap-band is right for you if:



  • your body mass index (BMI) is of 40 or more about 100 pounds overweight for men and 80 pounds for women.


  • Your BMI should be in between 35 and 39.9 and a serious obesity-related health problem such as type 2 diabetes, heart disease, or severe sleep apnea (when breathing stops for short periods during sleep).


  • You admit to change the lifestyle during the procedure.


  • Problem of overweight should for more than five years.


  • There is some other eligibility for lap band surgery criteria. Before going to lap band surgery just investigate whole advantages, disadvantages and one thing whether you can avail this or not.
