SAP: Business Process Solution Just for You - Web Application Server
It has grown enormously from its German roots. Right now, it is creeping all over the world and now ranked as the third largest software maker.
Most companies who have developed their own solutions in every component of their business process are migrating to SAP because of its power to integrate all the other components of your business. One thing unique with SAP is the capability to turn off features that you do not need, giving you the opportunity to turn them on later when your system expands. This feature of SAP makes it the most ´business process change´ friendly software in the market today.
SAP R/2 was the first integrated solution that caters to an enterprise wide environment. It was an astonishing success that propelled its phenomenal growth in the ´80s. The demand for client-server platforms caused the release of SAP R/3 in 1992. This catapulted SAP into the top 3 rank, with over 17,500 corporate customers where half of the top 500 corporations are included. With SAP, large companies can now easily integrate HR, Purchasing, Sales, Production Planning, Management Accounting, Financial Accounting, etc. Today, even small companies are dying to migrate to SAP because of the huge savings derived from the efficiency on integrated business processes.
Deploying SAP is expensive, and that truth is not hidden to anyone. But those who are into it are testifying the huge cost will soon be dwarfed by gigantic benefits. As on customer put it, their savings in just one component sufficed to cover the deployment of SAP in all other components of their business. The cost starts at $400,000 and would reach hundreds of millions depending on the industry. Initially, a beginning SAP user would need to set up three instances or boxes: production, test and development. There are SAP implementations with more than 100 instances that run multiple parallel projects, or what is popularly known as a ´program´.
Support is not a problem with SAP. The company, officially known as SAP AG, employs over 22,000 people today, organized into four departments: pre-sales, consulting, training and development. Aside from in-house support, there are independent consultants who know SAP very well and they are into the business of implementing the software into a particular business process. Yearly, conferences called SAPPHIRE are organized around the world. It is an expensive learning event, placed at $2,200 for 3 days to cover travel, food and lodging. But SAPPHIRE slots are often sold out in advance, attracting 14,000 prospects. America´s SAP User Group (ASUG) works exclusively for American clients. In 1999, about 6,000 prospects joined the ASUG annual event. With such widely dispersed help centers, migrating to SAP is a lot easier than developing interfaces to link your systems.
