Evangelicals Turn Their Backs On America's Mayor
Falwell stated he had great doubts the great ex-mayor of New York would carry any evangelical votes in 2008 because of his stance on gay marriages and abortion. Remember, this is the man, who stated that gays and feminists were the precipitating factor in the 9/11 tragedy. This is the same man, who declared Jews would not make it to heaven if they didn?t accept Christ.
On the other hand, the Republicans second great hope for 2008, Senator John McCain, has apparently mended the fences separating he and the evangelical leader. He will be speaking at the Liberty University commencement exercise. McCain is the same man, who in 2000, said that the likes of Falwell and Pat Robertson (700 Club guru) were pointing the Republican Party in the wrong direction. Clearly, Senator McCain is trying to tie up some loose ends before making a decision about 2008.
It?s amazing that any candidate seeking such a high office as President believe they must ally themselves with two bigoted and homophobic hypocrites like Falwell and Robertson. Both of these so-called conservatives are walking the fine line of sanity. Both have made complete fools of themselves in the public eye. Both Robertson in his comparison of liberals to Nazis and Falwell with his obvious hatred towards Jews and homosexuals combined could fly the Goodyear blimp on hot air alone.
Presidential candidates should stay as far away from these two unstable religious leaders as possible if they have an ounce of self-esteem. However, if they wish to throw values and compassion out the window, candidates should buddy-up to both of these maniacal extremists.
