Cheryl C. Malandrinos
Stanley Popovich is the author of A Layman's Guide to Managing Fear Using Psychology, Christianity and Non-Resistant Methods. Stan has been interviewing experts for years on these topics and has made many TV and radio show appearances. He has also written numerous articles in this area. You can find some of these articles at his website www.managingfear.com. With the upcoming holiday season approaching, now seemed like the perfect time for Stan and I to discuss his book.

Can you tell us a little about "A Layman's Guide to Managing Fear"?

My book, "A Layman´s Guide To Managing Fear", focuses on the main strategies and techniques to deal with fear and anxiety. These techniques involve cognitive and behavior therapy and also some Christian techniques in dealing with fear. The book goes into some detail on what techniques are most effective in different situations. A must read for anyone who struggles with fear and anxiety.

Why did you decide to write "A Layman´s Guide to Managing Fear"?

I have struggled with fear and anxiety for over 15 years. I went to Penn State from 1990 to 1995 and I had a difficult time in managing my anxieties. In order to manage my fears, I kept notes on what worked and what didn´t work in dealing with my stresses. I would talk to professionals and read books and kept a record of all the techniques I used in managing fear. After college, I kept track of my experiences in dealing with anxiety and fear. Eventually I decided to see if I could get my notes published into a small book.

What type of research did you perform for this book?

I read a lot of books, interviewed various counselors and clergyman, and learned what techniques were most effective during my 15 years of dealing with fear and anxiety. My book was reviewed by some professionals in the counseling and religious field before it was published.

Please tell us about the format of the book. How is it set up?

My book is divided into five chapters plus a Summary Section. The first chapter deals with the psychology and counseling techniques in managing fear. The second chapter goes into how to deal with the fear when you cannot get rid of it. The third chapter goes into the techniques that use the help of God. The Fourth chapter talks about how to use all of the three methods at the same time. My book than goes into the importance of getting help and where to go to get that help. The book then ends with a Summary Section that reviews some additional general counseling techniques, some statements from the Bible and some pages where the reader can write down some information.

Why is it important that this advice comes from a person with no psychology or religion background?

Although I do not have a psychology and religious background, I do have 15 years of personal experience in dealing with fear and anxiety. This is important because I have an excellent perspective from someone who actually lives with fear, anxiety, and depression. I do not just blurt out a bunch of ideas, but instead I focus only on those strategies that actually do work. I also include real life examples in how to apply these techniques. Most importantly, my book contains a lot of different techniques that give my readers many options in how to deal with their own fears. Also my book was reviewed by some professionals in the counseling and religious field before it was published.

What are three tips for managing fear from the book and how simple are they to apply to our daily living?

Here are three tips that are easy to use. For more free tips please read my free articles at www.managingfear.com.

1. Learn to take it one day at a time. Instead of worrying about how you will get through the rest of the week, try to focus on today. Each day can provide us with different opportunities to learn new things and that includes learning how to deal with your problems.

2. Some people get depressed and have a difficult time getting out of bed in the mornings. When this happens, a person should take a deep breath and try to find something to do to get their mind off of the problem. A person could take a walk, listen to some music, read the newspaper or do an activity that will give them a fresh perspective on things. Doing something will get your mind off of the problem and give you confidence to do other things.

3. A technique that is very helpful is to have a small notebook of positive statements that makes you feel good. Whenever you come across an affirmation that makes you feel good, write it down in a small notebook that you can carry around with you in your pocket. Whenever you feel depressed, open up your small notebook and read those statements.
