Colon Ulcers

James Moyog
Colon ulcers are not uncommon in the present day. These ulcers are the sores that appear inside the lining of the colon. Ulcers in the colon are caused by the unhealthy food habits and sometimes by abnormalities in the genetics. The harmful elements and the bacteria, when not removed in time, causes many problems and one result is the formation of ulcers. Ulcers can be prevented from occurring if the person takes good care of the colon by eating high fiber foods and lead a healthy lifestyle. When the problem is hereditary, it is very difficult to avoid the situation but steps can be taken to cure the ulcers. Treatment is very important and if left untreated, these ulcers will only become more dangerous.

Ulcers are indications of serious problems in the colon. They may be symptoms of ulcerative colitis, colon cancer or Crohn´s disease or other Inflammatory Bowel Diseases. The symptoms of having ulcers in the colon are rectal bleeding, diarrhea, abdominal pain, fever, weight loss, loss of appetite, fatigue, etc. the ulcers may be difficult to diagnose and therefore a very careful and thorough check up is necessary. Colon ulcers can be detected by doing various tests. One effective test is colonoscopy, where the doctor inserts a tube with camera light and instruments and gets a view of the colon. The doctor will be able to see what is actually wrong in the colon. If possible the doctor can even treat the ulcers by injecting some drug in the ulcers. The doctor may collect samples for biopsy. This is a very effective test for diagnosis.

Another way of detecting the ulcers is by doing blood test to check for anemia. This test may also uncover a high white blood cell count, which is a sign of inflammation somewhere in the body without colon cleanse. By testing a stool sample, the doctor can tell if there is bleeding or infection in the colon or rectum.

The treatment of the colon ulcers will depend on the nature of the ulcers. If it is mild then a good diet will make them disappear. Colon Cleansing product and Drugs such as Aminosalicylates, Corticosteroids and Immunomodulators are used to treat the ulcers. But these drugs are taken only on the recommendation of the doctor. If the ulcers don´t heal after using drugs, surgery is the best option. Surgery may be done to remove the part of the colon with ulcers or the whole colon may be removed if the condition is too bad. This will prevent ulcers from occurring in the future.
