Why such a virulent hate towards anything Macedonian?

Gandeto
In today´s propaganda laden minefield of pseudoscientific historiography in the Balkans, it is not the truth that reins supreme but the sublime hate that shapes and molds the so called research-driven entrepreneurship. The aim of the endeavored scientific studies is not to, through comparative analysis, dismiss or accept the finality of the outcome, but to manipulate and subvert the findings to suit the predetermined expectations for which the research was originally undertaken. In such a murky background the results are manipulated to fit the expected hypothesis and their subsequent interpretation is skewed to such an extent that neither the reliability nor the validity of such testing is redeemable as useful currency in today´s academic market.

In Vasco Gligorijevic´s article "The Anatomy of a Big Lie: Nationalistic Ideology and FYROM" from Nov. 15th I find virulent hate on display against Macedonia and the Macedonians. Indeed, he not only shows total disrespect for Macedonian history but at the same time allows his hateful and degrading views he holds for the Macedonian people to precipitate into an open aversion towards anything Macedonian. The descriptive vocabulary he used in his blatant-hate-filled narrative is appalling to say the least and his deep-seeded prejudices are more than obvious. One, from the enormity of his degradation of anything Macedonian, is precluded from arriving to any other conclusion but to class this person as a hate monger. Nothing in this article remotely suggests that this person is interested in disseminating the truth or allowing a sliver of light for the other side´s point of view.

To him the Macedonian ideology is "pseudo Macedonian"; the fact that people of the Republic of Macedonia call themselves Macedonians is irrelevant; he calls them "Slavo- Macedonians" as if this linguistic connection is reserved for the Macedonian people only, neglecting the fact that there are a host of other countries whose language has Slavic roots. The ruling Macedonian party VMRO-DPMNE is described as having "strongly anti-individualistic, collectivist stance", a sublime reminder to the reader to link them with the communists. Macedonian people operate into this "imaginary space" of "pseudomacedonism" based on faulty historiographic premises. I wonder what he thinks about the American ambassador to Macedonia Philip Reeker´s statement that Macedonia is a desired destination for American diplomats seeking ambassadorship abroad; there were 36 applications for a position of assistant ambassador alone a number that far exceeds any previously recorded number for any country in the world.

Furthermore, he describes the Macedonian historiographers as "amateurs" who usurp and nurture chauvinism towards Bulgarian history. He is having problems with Macedonian cultural heritage being called "Macedonian" and claims that historical sources dispute such a claim; one wonders what other historical sources are there if one excludes the cooked-books in the neighboring countries. When the Republic of Macedonia renamed the airport in Skopje to Alexander the Great, he calls it "Macedonist´s propaganda" that represents "low-complexity psychological operation". Hmm, one is compelled to ask: what psychological complexity level would one call the Greek operation in renaming their airport in Salonika to "Macedonia" airport?

Mr. Gligorijevic has a bone to pick with the Macedonian people and their reception of a Pakistani tribal Prince who recently visited Macedonia. It was his desire to come to the land of his "mythical" or perhaps, real progenitors. At least the Republic of Macedonia did not open an office in Pakistan like the Greeks did to establish and "educate" the tribal leaders that their "mythical" connection with Alexander´s army is indeed, a Greek connection.

He shows distinct displeasure with Macedonian people erecting statues of Alexander or Philip of Macedon but is silent when the same statues grace the Greeks cities´ landscape. He seems to be disturbed by the fact that MANU (Macedonian Academy of Sciences and Arts, which he puts it in quotation marks) in 2006 reported that the famous epigraphic monument , the "Rosetta Stone" produced in Ptolemaic Egypt contains a text written in language almost identical to the current Macedonian language.

Mr. Gligorijevic is afraid to say "Macedonian language" as it was stated in the document but ironically, connects it and describes it as "standardized Bulgarian idiom of FYROM".

That is so sad; the potency of the venom erodes the vessel in which it is being held.

Mr. Gligorijevic, let us drop the gloves and admit to ourselves that your intellectual veneer is nothing but an ugly double-hooded mask under which you hide your hate-filled drivel. MANU did not state "standardize Bulgarian idiom", YOU did. On the other hand, it is worth mentioning that leading world linguists are still not quite sure if the language on the Rosetta Stone is not in fact, Macedonian. What is "painfully absurd" is not MANU´s agreement with the proposed interpretation of the language but your absurd dislike for anything Macedonian.

Also, this person believes that Macedonians display irredentist behavior towards their neighbors Serbia and Bulgaria. Do you care to elaborate your accusation Mr. Gligorijevic? It seems to me you have minor geographical errors in computing the events; it was the Greek army that was flexing its puny muscles on the Macedonian border. The Republic of Macedonia does not hold any territorial designs on lands that belong to our neighbors nor does it occupy an inch of their territory; it is the other way around, Mr. Gligorijevic.

In addition, while experiencing great difficulties with our name, Mr. Grigorijevic has troubles accepting the fact that the Republic of Macedonia has cemented its place in the League of Nations with more than 120 countries recognizing the country as Republic of Macedonia including USA, Canada, India, Russia and China. He states:

"Sensationalism found its logical outlet in a society where the very identity is permanently challenged by historiographies of neighbors and other countries as well."

You must be getting desperate in your wishful thinking; really, Mr. Gligorijevic, what other countries have challenged our historiography? Isn´t it a fact that the three neighbors Greece, Serbia and Bulgaria partitioned Macedonia after the Balkan War? If this is an "invented dream" sir, would you say then, that Serbia was a willing party to relinquish the rule over its "own" territory and "donate" the land to the "pseudo Macedonians" to form their own country?

Finally Mr. Grigorijevic (or whatever your real name is) the Macedonian historians are not any more fake than your Greek historian or Bulgarian or Serbian historian for that matter. Please, do not claim that you have occupied the "corner" of the intellectual milieu or that you have the sharpest focal points of all countries in the Balkans. In my opinion we are more or less the same bunch of mongrels created in most unhappy times and locked in bitter disputes where winds of hate and prejudice do justice to irrational thinking and stubborn mentality.

Instead promoting KKK ideology, you should turn around and embrace the Republic of Macedonia. She is the only true friend you have in the region. Think again and envision what would be like for Greece if Macedonia becomes what you wished her to become; you will be surrounded by your worst nightmare. Cherish the fact that you have the ethnic Macedonians in Greece still peaceful and civilized. Extend to them what is only theirs to begin with; their human rights as citizens of Greece. After all, your house is not made of glass, is it?

Until next time….
