Menstrual Cycle - Causes, Symptoms and Treatment

Peter Rodrick
Although every woman's body responds uniquely to the hormonal changes brought on by nursing their babies, there are certain constants that are associated with the monthly menstrual cycle and breastfeeding. Many women will experience irregular periods while nursing, while others will not menstruate at all until they stop breastfeeding their babies altogether.

As a general rule, breastfeeding causes a delay in the return of menstruation following pregnancy for most women. Also, the frequency of breastfeeding plays a large role as to how soon the menstrual cycle is regulated and once again normal. Women who nurse their babies exclusively may not have a period for as long as a year or more after their pregnancies and will soon discover that the menstrual cycle and breastfeeding seem to be directly related to one another.

Causes Of Irregular Periods

A woman can have irregular periods due to significant weight loss or weight gain.

Over exercise can also result in irregular menstruation.

Poor nutrition and diet which is rich in carbohydrates is also related to hormonal imbalance and menstrual disturbances.

Some drugs can also cause irregularities in menstruation.

Many women who are smokers experience irregular periods.

Excessive intake of coffee is also a cause of irregular menstruation.

Some specific drugs can also cause menstrual irregularities.

What are the symptoms

The degree of discomfort experienced during menstruation varies from woman to woman. Some are never bothered by their periods, while others can be badly affected by unpleasant symptoms. These may include:

pains in the abdomen

pain in the vagina

feeling nauseous and generally unwell

diarrhoea

sweating

fatigue.

Treatments for Menstrual Cycle

If you´re experiencing abnormal uterine bleeding or AUB, several factors play a role in determining the appropriate treatment. These factors include the type of abnormal uterine bleeding you´re experiencing, the underlying cause, your age, and whether you desire future pregnancies.

Natural and holistic treatments such as herbal and homeopathic remedies may also provide symptomatic relief for menstrual disorders. Herbal and homeopathic remedies are safe and gentle to use for the body, and also promote overall health and well being. Herbs such as Dong Quai (Angelica Sinesis) encourage hormonal harmony throughout the menstrual cycle while Pulsatilla vulgaris (Pasque Flower) helps to support the female reproductive system.

Melissa officinale (Lemon Balm) calms and promotes a stable mood and Foeniculum vulgare (Sweet Fennel) acts as a liver tonic and promotes water balance. In addition, homeopathic ingredients such as Calc. carb, Sepia and Belladonna help to support a normal menstrual flow, balanced mood, and reduce fatigue thus increasing and energy levels.

Recommended treatment can include medication or various self-help techniques, or both. Bancroft and Ebling may recommend oral contraceptives, medications to regulate abnormal bleeding, or antidepressants, or they may advise a women to discontinue use of oral contraceptives. They also provide patients with information on self-help techniques including stress-reduction activities and modification of diet and exercise.
