Melanoma - Causes, Symptoms and Treatment

Melanoma is the most common form of skin cancer and skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the Western world. It begins in skin cells called melanocytes.
Melanocytes are found under the skin, which is made up of two layers: the epidermis on the outside and the dermis below that. To be accurate, melanocytes are found in the lowest levels of the epidermis, but not actually in the dermis. These cells produce melanin, which affects the epidermis' pigmentation, both natural skin colour and because of exposure to the sun as in tanning.
Cause of Melanoma
It is true that cancer is caused because of inherited composition of a person. It can also depend upon the exposure of human body towards the environment. If we discuss about the causes of malignant melanoma then we should know that exposure of the sun is high then a patient might have problems of malignant melanoma. Specifically, when the exposure of human body against the ultraviolet rays of sun.
Other than the U.V. rays of the sun the other causes of this cancer are mutations or the total loss of tumor suppressing genes. Melanoma is also caused by the regular use of sun beds. These beds are known to permit deep penetration of UV rays.

Signs & Symptoms of Melanoma
Look for changes in the moles. The ABCD system of the American Cancer Society is very easy to understand.
A-Asymmetry. One half doesn't match the other half.
B-Border irregularity, with ragged, notched, or blurred edges.
C- Color. The pigmentation is not uniform. Shades of tan, brown, and black are present. Changes in colour distribution, especially the spread of colour from the edge of a mole into the surrounding skin, also are an early sign of melanoma.
D-Diameter. The mole or skin growth is larger than 6 mm (0.2 in.).
Melanoma Treatment
Advanced melanoma treatment includes chemotherapy. This either involves the use of cancer drugs in capsule form or intravenous injections to kill the cancer cells.
Biological and radiation therapies are the last bastions of melanoma treatment. In the former, laboratory-generated cancer-combating substances called biological response, modifiers (BRMs) like tumor vaccines, interleukin-2, or interferon-alfa are administered to the melanoma patient.
Immunotherapy
Biotherapy or immunotherapy aims at treating skin cancer by enhancing the body´s immune system with doses of tumor vaccines, interleukin-2, or interferon-alfa. It involves fewer side effects than other methods.
Hyperthermia
The cancer cell is known to be sensitive to heat. Local hyperthermia is one method of cancer treatment where the whole body or the concerned area is subject to high temperatures to destroy or weaken cancer cells.
