By Means of Equality?

Alvin James
For all of us, life is granted. The freedom to choose how we are to live, however, is not. Government regulations define many aspects of our lives: from the restrictions on abortions to same-sex marriage, from gun laws to the right to protest.

In 1960, it was illegal in 16 states for interracial couples to marry, supposedly violating the sanctity of marriage. Slaves were not allowed to marry, for they were property, and hate crimes were yet to be illegalized.

Today, the nation is taking a stand. Means of Equality, an online organization is trying to do what our forefathers intended for us to do so many years ago: Form a more perfect union.

This divide, that conquers us all, only tears down the walls that are built to protect ourselves. We as a nation should come together not to fight or raise our voice, but to build lasting relationships that will hold our nation together. Buy some yellow roses and pass them out to local businesses, extend your hand in friendship. Let others know that even though you may disagree on issues, it does not mean that your bond as American citizens will ever be broken.

Speak up America, and let it not be through rioting or protests, hate mail or slander, but let it be through extending our hands in gratitude for serving our food, selling us clothes, providing our news, being our neighbor, school teacher, and police officer even if we do not agree on the same issues.

Means of Equality is a fledgling online organization looking for your support. An online petition is available asking for support if you would like to ask the President of the United States to grant equal protection under the law and the right to marry to homosexuals. You may visit them at www.meansofequality.org
