We Deserve Better

Stan Grimes
What exactly is a ?public servant?? Could it be someone, who listens to the public and tries his/her best to address the concerns of those he or she serves? Why aren?t our public servants listening to what their bosses are telling them? The majority of Americans are not happy with the war in Iraq. Why then are we still in it? The majority of the public wants a viable solution to our immigration problem. Why don?t we have a reasonable solution to that problem? The majority of Americans want better paying jobs. Where are they? Citizens want a better taxation system. Why do we still have to figure out complicated tax forms. Most people want decent healthcare and insurance. Yet, costs of taking care of one?s health keeps rising unrestricted.

The list goes on and on. Why aren?t our elected public servants listening to us? I have a theory. Money speaks much louder than our voices, emails, letters, protests, and phone calls. Money is power. The shibboleth of our current administration is ?power.? ?Power tends to corrupt. Absolute power corrupts absolutely.? The Bush Administration has shown time eternal that what people want in this country and what people get are two entirely different matters. Big brother has taken over the family.

Our country is divided, perhaps as much as it was before the Civil War. Instead of the blue and gray of the Civil War era, we have the red and blue of the Bush era. Our country needs to become one color. We must find bipartisan ways of solving our problems. We must vote for ?listeners? and ?communicators? to carry our voices to the Whitehouse or our democracy will follow the ill-fated Greek democracy of old. We deserve better. Our taxes pay for a nice benefit package and a livable salary for our leaders. We give them more vacations a year than our children get from school. What we ask in return is someone to listen to our concerns. We deserve better.
