A top hip-hop performer and superstar Eminem's best friend was shot dead in the early hours of yesterday morning in a nightclub along Detroit's emblematic Eight Mile Road.

Proof, whose real name was DeShaun Holton, got into an altercation at the "CCC" nightclub which quickly turned deadly when gunshots rang out in the celebrity nightspot, according to the Detroit police detectives investigating the case.

Proof was shot in the head, as was a second club patron, but it was not immediately clear who the other victim was or what his condition might be.

Eight Mile Road serves as the boundary between the black Detroit inner city and the white suburbs. Detroit rap artists claim it is the birthplace of modern hip-hop. Eminem's 2002 motion picture "8 Mile," featured 8 Mile Road. Proof was in that movie and played the part of Lil' Tic.

Yesterday, the 31-year old rapper was pronounced dead on arrival at a medical clinic not far from the nightclub. A spokesman for his group D12's record label, Interscope Records, requested the mean and fans allow privacy while Proof's family and friends made funeral arrangements.

No one has been arrested as yet and a suspect has not been named by police.
