LaRocco on Social Security: No Privatization, No Reduction in Benefits

BOISE, IDAHO – Unlike his opponent, Jim Risch, Larry LaRocco has a strong and unequivocal stance on Social Security: he opposes privatization, and opposes any reduction in benefits. While Risch has responded to two questionnaires by saying he would consider privatization, then tried to hedge on that position in the Lewiston debate, LaRocco´s answers have been strong and consistent.
The Alliance for Retired Americans, which has 6,900 members in Idaho, has endorsed LaRocco, saying, "Your positions demonstrate a strong commitment to improve the quality of life for older Americans. Your leadership on issues such as fighting Social Security privatization and strengthening the Social Security and Medicare systems exhibits that commitment."
The National Committee to Preserve Social Security and Medicare asked, "Will you oppose diverting any amount of payroll taxes into private, individual investment accounts?" LaRocco´s answer was a resounding "Yes."
In response to a question from the National Association of Retired Federal Employees, LaRocco wrote, "I will oppose privatization plans that would divert Social Security taxes to private accounts."
The National Education Association, whose Idaho affiliate has endorsed LaRocco, "opposes any effort to privatize Social Security." LaRocco expressed support for that position.
In response to the American Federation of Teachers, LaRocco wrote, "I oppose individual private accounts funded by the current Social Security payroll tax."
The National Retiree Legislative Network, a coalition of 18 retiree associations, asked "Will you support legislation that ensures Social Security will be financially secure and continue to provide the current, or improved, level of retirement income benefits for present and future retirees?" LaRocco responded with a strong "Yes."
The United Food & Commercial Workers asked, "If elected, would you oppose privatizing Social Security?" LaRocco answered "Yes."
As far as we can determine, Jim Risch didn´t respond to any of these questionnaires.
The record is clear. Larry LaRocco opposes the privatization of Social Security. Jim Risch supports it. Jim Risch is dead wrong on this critical issue.
