Godless Americans Oh My

Stan Grimes
North Carolina´s Senator Elizabeth Dole created an ad attacking her opponent for having attended a "Godless Americans" meeting held in her honor. I ask, "So what?" Is that the same as attending a meeting with Osama Bin Laden? Godless Americans are simply a group of atheists, a little radical yes, but dangerous? I don´t think so.

Anyone who has glanced at some of my articles will know that I am an atheist. That´s right, I am "Godless." I am a writer, a grandfather, a husband, a father, and a working-class American. If I invited Kay Hagan for dinner would she then be accused of cavorting with a "Godless American." I suppose so.

What has become of our country? This country was founded on freedom of religion and implied in that building block is the freedom to not believe in religion. According to 2001 figures there are almost two million atheists in North America. Atheists are not socialists, terrorists, communists, or fascists. They are simply people with a differing viewpoint of how this world was created. To my knowledge people that I know who proclaim that they are "Godless" are simply people, nothing more, nothing less.

Are we voting for the Christian God in this election? Let´s do a little "what if" here. What if a nominee was a Muslim, a Buddhist, or a Hindu? Would you vote for them? Remember the rumors that Obama was a Muslim (which by the way 26% of Texans still do) my goodness the country just about did a collective suicide chant for the candidate. What´s that about? All religions believe in some type of higher being full of goodness and wisdom. So what´s the difference? Christianity? Christianity is a religion supposedly based on love and acceptance of all people. We´re all brothers and sisters right? Wrong? It doesn´t look that way to me.

There is a distinct difference between Godless Americans and Godless behavior. I have a close friend that just happens to be an atheist. I would trust him with my life, which is more than I can say about some of the declared Christians I have met over the years. Religion has become the standard of measure for moral superiority in this country of ours. When in fact the standard for moral superiority in this marvelous world of ours should be just that…morality, and each person´s view of moral behavior.

Unbelievers having a dinner in honor of a Senatorial candidate should in fact be an honor, not an opportunity for a Christian witch-hunt. We have fallen off the "road less traveled by" and have decided to take the lowest form of super highway of immorality we could find.

Shame on Elizabeth Dole and shame on America.
