3,100 Participants Raise Awareness and More Than $625,000 for Alzheimer´s Disease.

LOS ANGELES - The Alzheimer´s Association Memory Walk®, held Sunday, October 5 in downtown Los Angeles, raised more than $625,000 for Alzheimer´s disease care, support and research. Nearly 3,100 dedicated individuals from across Los Angeles County participated in the 16th annual event, held by the Alzheimer´s Association, California Southland chapter.

This was the chapter´s largest Memory Walk to date, with 311 teams making the 3-mile trek in memory and support of loved ones. The event established new chapter records for participants, teams and funds raised while lifting the spirits of many, who found that joining others who are affected by Alzheimer´s gave them renewed courage and hope.

Although Memory Walk is a time to reflect, it offers a great deal of fun. Participants enjoyed the live band MVPs, mingled at the Champions Health & Wellness Expo, and got photos taken by HBO. They also received massages, screenings and respite care at the Evercare Family Tent and were able to pose with the Wells Fargo stagecoach.

Television personality Steve Edwards was the master of ceremonies and was joined by Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, Councilwoman Jan Perry, and celebrities that included Peter Gallagher, Leeza Gibbons, Victor Garber, Ron Rifkin, Bob Goen, Tracie Thoms, Ron Brown and Rafer Johnson.

This was the 16th year for the Alzheimer's Association Memory Walk, which has grown from a small event where several hundred supporters gathered at the Los Angeles Zoo to the all-inclusive family-oriented event it is today that takes participants past iconic landmarks throughout downtown Los Angeles.

The next Alzheimer´s Association Memory Walk will be March 28, 2009 at Civic Center Park in Palm Desert. For information, team sign-ups or to donate, contact the Coachella Valley office at 760-328-6767, www.alzla.org/mw/cv or locally: (323) 930-6228.

The Alzheimer's Association Memory Walk is nationally presented by Genworth Financial and locally presented by Wells Fargo. Memory Walk events are held across the country in an effort to provide support and help find a cure. Since 1989, Memory Walk has raised more than $230 million for the Alzheimer's cause.
