School Violence. A Major Issue Facing American Schools

Burrell Pope, Ed.S
A major issue that is found in the public and private educational system in America is school violence. School violence is on the rise in most of the schools across the country. Many students cannot focus on academics because they are concerned for their safety. Within the last week I have had to break up several fights in which a student was attacked by at least two or three other students.

In order to decrease school violence educational leaders will need to implement specific policies to detour violent behavior. Furthermore, educational leaders need to make sure that they enforce discipline policies throughout their school. If a student is involved in or has an association with violent behavior they should know the consequences for their actions. Another example of how educational leaders can resolve this issue is by making sure that they educate and inform their staff and faculty about the problem.

One of the trends that I foresee in educational leadership in the coming years is more professional development and training for administrators. In my opinion, many administrators have no formal training in dealing with discipline and school violence. A large number of administrators make decisions based on emotions or feelings. In the upcoming years, school systems will focus more attention on educating and training administrators on thier daily duties. One of my past principals informed me that he was never formally trained for his position; he had to learn as he went. In order to combat current issues in the school system, educational leaders need the appropriate training, guidance, and support.
