ELLEN DEGENERES COMMENDED BY MARRIAGE EQUALITY

San Francisco - "Last night, Ellen DeGeneres clearly articulated what thousands of same-sex couples and their friends and families know, marriage and domestic partnerships are not the same," said Molly McKay, Marriage Equality USA (MEUSA) Media Director. "Proposition 8 would eliminate the right of same-sex couples to marry and that is unfair. But the power of personal stories, like Ellen's, will help ensure that Californians will defeat this harmful initiative in November."

Tuesday evening, DeGeneres in an interview with Jay Leno on the Tonight Show described her recent wedding to Portia DiRossi and asked Californians to vote No on 8. DeGeneres said, "Being married feels so good, it feels different…I didn't think it would, but I'm very happy. (Our wedding) was a special day and my mother got to be a part of something she didn't think she ever would. But Proposition 8 would take this right away and stop people like us from marrying. So please, No on 8, so we can end this hate. There is really not enough love in this world."

"Same-sex couples are marrying in every county of California and as they follow Ellen's footsteps and share their personal stories with their neighbors, support for marriage equality grows," states Pamela Brown, MEUSA Policy Director. "Marriage has had a profound impact on these couples, along with their friends and families, and as others hear how important this experience was, they agree no one should be denied this happiness. Jay Leno said he said he just didn't get it, why someone would want to prevent two people in love from marrying and we strongly believe other Californians share that same sentiment."

Brown continues, "Furthermore, Yes on 8 proponents won't have one personal story to show the harm of not passing this initiative, because there isn't any. Instead, they will rely on lies and scare tactics to mislead voters and we believe Californians will see right through that."

McKay concludes, "In the end, this issue is about not treating one segment of our community differently. Our laws should guarantee the same rights and freedoms to everyone and the government shouldn't tell people that have been together for years that they can or cannot be married. But Proposition 8 would eliminate that fundamental right of marriage and that's wrong. All Californians should be granted the same dignity and respect."
