Health: The Greatest Gift in Life
The doctors informed her that she had a life-threatening disease. She would not live to see Christmas, and would be lucky to see Thanksgiving.
The woman was devastated. She couldn´t stop thinking about her two children, her husband, and her sister and best friend. How was she going to tell her family? What was she going to do?
But there was one hope, the doctors informed her. If she exercised just 30 minutes, every day, for the next month, she could add a month on to her life. Each month filled with exercise would add another month to her life. She could sustain her life for as long as she chose.
The woman began to tear up. She couldn´t believe this great news. She was so thankful that she had the ability to sustain her own life…to stay connected with the family she loved, and the friends that she cherished.
Every day, the woman would wake up and perform her 30 minutes of exercise. Some days she would do aerobics by running, biking, or walking. Other days, she would go to a gym and lift weights with her sister.
November came and went, and the woman was thrilled that she had made it past Thanksgiving. She was grateful that she could share the holiday with her loved ones. And it was more precious now than it had ever been.
One day, the woman awoke and performed her normal morning workout, thrilled to be alive. It was Christmas day. She had prolonged her life and could share in this wonderful holiday; she could see the looks on her children´s faces as they opened their presents; and she could give thanks at least one more time with her family and loved ones.
But something else had changed too. She had grown to love exercising every morning. Her disease was no longer the sole force driving her to exercise. She actually enjoyed getting up every morning and working out. It gave her joy and happiness. She used it as a stress reliever. It even allowed her to connect on another level with her sister.
As the woman thought about this, she actually gave thanks for her disease because, if she had not been given this gift, she would have never had any reason to change and she would have missed out on one of the greatest gifts we all have been given: The gift of health.
