Americans Still in Denial? Obama NO? McCain YES?

Patrick Lockyer
Someone needs to get it over to the Americans who are still in denial? As softly and as friendly and as supportive as we can be but with honesty. Obama came the nearest to doing so last night but still he knew there are 'no go' areas that would alienate the American public even this long after 9/11. Obama states it like it is that America cannot go it alone and is vulnerable. Financially and militarily. Bin Laden laid out that his beef was the occupation of Saudi Arabia and the treatment of Palestinians being 'biggy's'' to him.

Incidentally, the emphasis on getting this old man is pathetic. It changes nothing and is just now important to Bush to have on his final exit resume. The Muslims who perpetrated 9/11 were allies accepted and embraced here in the states. They were students and secretly learning to fly. They could not BE further removed from the dead Iraqi's over these five years of invasion and occupation. My question for McCain the same, would be this. ''If we had invaded Iraq in 2000 a year BEFORE 9/11 and were in occupation at the time, what single act of aggression and occupation would have stopped the students from completing their plans with the same success?'' The answer? Zilch. Nada. Nothing. To boast that nothing has happened since then is also ludicrous. If it were 15 years before a similar disaster were perpetrated on us they still win. There IS no winning in Iraq and Afghanistan. We just widen the ripples on the hatred pond.

When will anyone not see that we still support brutality in Palestine? It is scary as a Brit writer and observer in sunny Florida these last seven years to determine that religiosity makes for the mindset that any action by Israel is 'ordained'. I research and am disgusted at what Palestinians endure. America just will veto after veto in the Israeli favor at the UN and see no correlation between the Muslim anger and their policy. We left Saudi Arabia at least but now occupy Iraq and show purpose to always do so. We use so much oil and need so much that we have to dominate the region. How can a nation with 3% of the resources eating 25% of the worlds oil not be in trouble? It was fine for America during the cold war as Russia was the pariah. Therefore no Russian competition for gas. Now we compete with them and India and China. We are in trouble as Rush Limbaugh will always want many vehicles and many gas guzzlers and there will always be monster trucks that you can see under.

Try to make Americans more conservative and less ostentatious? Yeah right. Brits in our UK newspapers deplore the Beckham over opulence. Americans admire it. We sneer at that kind of greed. They rush out and shine your car. Brits would probably 'key it'? Just a word on the Russian situation. We are goading them to get sanctions against them and more cheap gas perhaps? Georgia stepped out of line and no one mentioned that in the debate. Going back to the Cuban crisis, that would be like Cuba sending up test missiles to aggravate the USA. Common sense averted a disaster then but what are we doing encouraging these Russian spin offs to push their luck? Guess what? Its about oil again. No pipeline and we would not be interested. Giving these countries protection would be just like Russian missiles in Cuba. Get real. We CANNOT protect them anymore than Russia could protect Cuba in JFK's era. Then there is Iran. We did not stop India and Pakistan gaining nuclear power. Iran is entitled to have peaceful nuclear power. What is all this nonsense about protecting Israel from Iran. It is more like how do we as a world protect Iran from trigger happy Israel and her mate America who would love it to bits if they bombed them into a dust bowl existence? Have we forgotten the glee and the service provided to the Israelis in their Lebanon brutal debacle over some antique rockets fired into their sands in desperation? They still deal with our clusterbombs? McCain would be just the same as Bush on this. America would just go from conflict to conflict. No one is talking about how you make Americans use less gas and have smaller vehicles and use public transport more.

America is spoiled and will hear none of it about being conservative with resources. Some think that ''If we don't have it we should just go grab it as we have the power''. No one is going to be favored with selection if they think otherwise. So scary to the world at large. At least Obama has the idea and the imagination to see it from the other side. Very few Americans get that part of the issue. Less war and less armaments and more health care and more jobs will make America safer and less support of brutality wherever it is perpetrated.

Finally American friend, get this and get it good. America is not one ounce safer from the last eight years of Bush office. They hit hard and true on 9/11. They still influence thought and deed in America and will for decades. They cause stress and despondency. They can feed off their success for eternity as you cannot set the clock back. We will still have to endure the images of that day and they remain awful. We cannot brag on the two most iconic buildings in the world being taken down not having been repeated yet. Get real. We have to consider other ways than brute force to defeat terrorism as history will tell us. Maggie Thatchers hotel was bombed and the perpetrators ended up around a table with the British Government. America did not invent terrorism. There has to be dialogue and Obama has it right. The hard nosed McCain has no clue.

With his set jaw and gnarled look he is a dangerous person to have holding the nuclear button. He is Doctor Strangelove. Him in charge in 1962 instead of JFK with Cuba and with me in Berlin driving Generals my life might have mapped out differently. I was at the sharp end. Thank you JFK. The world sees the mastery of the new JFK in Obama. Why don't you folks? Give me a world citizen anyday as this planet is surely shrinking and we are all in this together. Vote Obama and survive. Otherwise see the decline of America continuing unabated.
