Unknown Phone Numbers on Your Phone Bill Are No Longer a Mystery

Evangeline Bruce
Like most phone consumers, you probably carefully check your bill every month to make sure all of the expenses add up and nothing is amiss. You may also check to see if there were any strange numbers called or made to your phone. In the even you discover unknown numbers, what do you do usually do about it?

Do you…

A – Ignore it and think it´s simply a wrong number call?

B – Try to guess who the number may belong to based on the area code?

C – Ask other members in your household who use the phone if they know who the number owner is?

D – Call the number back and try to find out who owns it?

E – Run the number through a reverse phone lookup to see if you can discover the owner´s identity and other information?

Although each of the above actions may help you discover who owns the phone number, if you are looking for a quick and handy way to solve the mystery, you should pursue option E first – a reverse phone lookup.

Why? One good reason is why should you waste your time guessing the identity of a phone consumer when you can find out with a simple search? Also, phoning the number back may sound reasonable, but if the number is long distance you´ll need to pay for the call, and what if it turns out to belong to someone whom you don´t actually want to be in contact with (I.E. telemarketer, harasser, scammer, ex-partner, irritating relative, etc.).

To conduct the backwards number trace, take the phone bill to your computer desk, access the Internet, and find a website that provides a free lookup and includes wireless numbers in its results (I.E. look for a "free reverse cell phone lookup"). Enter in the telephone numbers you want to investigate and search. If you discover it is a wireless number, and the free information, such as the city and state and phone carrier is not enough to tip you off on who the owner is, you may then want to consider paying for a commercial directory, which may be able to provide you with a full phone report.

What if you don´t want to pay to find out who owns a phone number? You can always try entering the ten digits into a search engine and see if the number can be found anywhere on the web. Lastly, you still have the option of calling it back.
