Is America Ready For A Woman President?

Judy Ramsook
Throughout the ages women have been the glue that holds societies together, this transcends culture and time. For eons they have been keeping families together. They represent one half of the procreation couple, dole out discipline when it is needed so their kids can be kept in line, serve as a moral compass, hold family gatherings and such.

Even men who have claimed that they have never and probably will never understand what goes on in a woman’s mind, she is the one entity no society can live without, but when it comes down to being the leader of a geographically huge and magnificent nation as America, one might put forth the question, is America ready for a woman president?

Since 1945 the world has had its share of women leaders. They are too many to list here, but they can be viewed on this site: http://www.terra.es/personal2/monolith/00women3.htm Quite an impressive list, isn’t it? From the earliest to the latest.

To add to this list is soon to be sworn in prime minister of the Caribbean island of Jamaica, Portia Simpson-Miller. If one takes a closer look at the list, he or she can observe that some of the countries that have had women prime ministers are countries in which men play a dominant role. Countries such as Pakistan and India for example.

Fast forward to the western world and pause for a moment on what is by far the most powerful nation in the world, America. It is a nation in which women, if they choose to, have the option of using certain rights to their advantage. One of those rights includes running for public office.

A couple of names have been surfacing recently. Those of Ms. Condoleeza Rice and Hillary Rodham Clinton. If both parties were to seriously throw their hats in the ring, who would you choose?

Will your decision be based solely on the stance they have on certain issues or will it come down to a party based decision. Democrat or Republican?

Certainly, right now it may seem like an interesting water cooler topic of conversation, but say come 2008, if the two women mentioned are the ones left standing in the race for the White House, will there be a higher voter turn out? Will some enthusiastic persons think to themselves, well this is indeed interesting.

Will others who dislike the concept of having a woman at the helm of such a great nation stage peaceful protests? Will some young persons in our midst think, well this is the 21st century, maybe it is time for a change.

Which ever way it turns out, 2008 should be an interesting year indeed. At the end of it all though, will there be a president elect woman, is the burning question some are wondering about. If so, is or will America be ready to accept her?
