FBI Investigating Tom Cruise?
The subject conversation is believed to have been intercepted by "private-eye-to-the-stars" Anthony Pellicano after Kidman and Cruise began their talk of divorce. Pellicano's client list includes such celebrities as the Clintons, Michael Jackson, Elizabeth Taylor and Mrs. Keith Carradine. He's been charged with illegally wiretapping several movie industry figures, including Sylvester Stallone.
Pellicano also worked for Los Angeles attorney Dennis Wasser, whom Tom Cruise retained during the Cruise v. Kidman divorce proceedings.
Kidman would not talk about the wiretap investigation but a private detective who worked for her divorce lawyer said he was surprised the conversations were taped, according to the Daily Telegraph. But her spokesperson Richie Di Sabatino said Kidman's phone had regularly been checked for wiretaps.
"We swept her phones and put on an encryption device, so she couldn't be wiretapped," Mr. Di Sabatino told the Telegraph. "We tried to keep one step ahead."
Mr. Di Sabatino said the Kidman recording "was probably from Tom's phone."
The taped conversation was seized by police in a raid of Pellicano's office, which also uncovered some C4 explosive, two grenades and large amounts of illegal recordings, the Daily Telegraph reported.
An FBI agent told this writer that Cruise is not the target of this on-going criminal investigation at this point. Pellicano is the target. However, agents are digging into the private eye's work for a number of people -- work that entailed illegal activity including menacing people on behalf of his clients.
For instance, it's believed that Pellicano worked for Bill Clinton, directly or indirectly, as part of the "goon squad" sent out to harass and silence women who had negative information regarding the former President.
Pellicano is currently in prison on illegal weapons charges and will face court next month on wiretapping, racketeering and conspiracy charges. So far, 13 suspects have been arrested as part of the investigation. One of those arrested is a Los Angeles police officer who provided Pellicano with information from police databases.
Other Hollywood stars questioned during the investigation are Warren Beatty and Garry Shandling, according to Fox News.
